Some kind of error transpiring between the .news.com/index.html portion of it.

Two things, index.html is just the default, one can set up a domain name to point to a specific page other than index.html, home.php for scripted entrance to a website for example, so it is entirely possible that their domain pointer goes to a different page.

The link is going to whatever the default page is. It has an onclick call to a function "__gaTracker" which is contained in an external javascript file (meaning I can't find out what it does without more serious hacking), but typically that is record keeping; quite common in both marketing research/tracking and pay per click veins.

Also looks like the domain name was either renewed or purchased on [Updated Date:] 26-apr-2015 if that's relevant to your digging.

Some people unlike you apparently DFC. These type of people generally know how to do their own research to verify whatever others may be publishing in any given article that peaks their interest. Those that DFC and criticize others are sometimes merely too lazy, to ignorant or too dumb to do their own research to actually verify if the publisher of any given article is correct or not. The lazy, ignorant and dumb just do quick searches and depend on naysayers to make their decisions and many of those ultimately jump off cliffs of despair when life goes to shit for them.
