BP inserts tube into leaking pipe

what are the figures...we have 2 % of the oil....5 % of the world population and use 25 % of the world's oil....kinda says it all...and if you want a fucking link google it

This is a fake statistic, just so you know. The full statistic should be 25% of the worlds oil is used by the world's biggest economy. Traditionally, the US economy has far outranked that of any other country. THAT is why we use 25% of the world's oil. Without the US economy, the rest of the world would be in serious shit. THAT is why we use 25% of the world's oil.

If you are gonna use stats, use them correctly and stop quoting junk stats.

And, before you have a hissy fit.... I happen to agree that we need to find alternatives to oil, that US consumers need to cut down their consumption, etc.... BUT.... if you are gonna quote stats, quote them correctly or don't quote them - otherwise it is dishonest.

we have every option to cease drilling offshore. First and foremost is to require mileage standards that would mandate hybrids or electrics. Second would be to build a modern grid that would pick up alternative energies at the optimum locations. No differant than building the interstates in the 50s and 60s.

so when the governor of virginia just raised the speed on interstates from 65 to 70, that would be going in the wrong direction?

We have to be realistic rocks, at least for now. The offshore drilling needs to continue, but with added safeguards and more oversight. A spill such as this can never happen again.
socialist !!!!!!

BP's estimates of whats being captured with the tube is 1,000 barrels or 20 percent. Yet independent scientist want to test the actual amount to verify how much is spilling. This is the reason for knowing the actual flow. If its 70,000 barrels and they are only capturing an estimate of a 1,000 barrels. That is like using a straw to capture water out of a fire hydrant. If it is 5,000 barrels then they are making real progress. Everyone knows BP figured out the correct rate of flow immediately as soon as they got instrumentation down there. The one being published certainly does not look accurate to many scientists. Where is the government and its transparency in all of this? Why are they not protecting its own citizens that have to deal with this mess for decades? We need to find the correct estimate of flow so we can properly assess the job BP is doing and the damage that is being caused to the ecosystem. If we do not find this out then we will never know and that will sting the most.

If the oil makes it around the keys and up the east coast, even as sheen, folks are going to be screaming loudly! It is hard to tell just what damage has been done, even to this point. We can only hope that it is not long term or devistating...

the stats are correct you simply like to interpet them the way you like...doesnt make the stats wrong

America might cease - foreign companies will not. International waters are international waters and 'we' will have no say in who drills where, and what safety standards are in place - unless we are part of any offshore drilling. Wanna take that risk? Because it would be a seriously stupid risk to take.

I would prefer that we ensure we are heavily involved in off shore drilling - because we learn by our mistakes and we care about safety and environmental issues. I would also prefer that the American people wake the fuck up and stop wasting resources.

Hey stupid......some quick facts for you.

BP - British company.

Deepwater Horizon - Flying the flag of the Marshall Islands.

Halliburton - World hq is in Dubai.

Where is the "American" drilling company again?

It is junk when you don't quote the whole stat. Either quote the whole stat or it is meaningless. It has become one of those ridiculous stats that everyone quotes to 'prove' a point about our consumption.... BUT.... it is wrong. With stats, you have to put them into context or you become an 'rdean' with his idiocy about 6% of scientists being republican.

Generally (not aimed at bones): If you are going to quote the stat about the 5% of the worlds population using 25% of the worlds oil, in order to be taken seriously, you need to include the FACT that our GDP has (historically) been over 100% bigger than the next biggest which is Japan (historically). So, actually, we should be using far more than 25% of the worlds oil supply. Let's try and be accurate. Thanks.

Don't post when stoned. I was not referring to this specific incident.... in response to Old Rocks comment about 'off shore drilling'.

Try not to make yourself look stupid by calling others stupid when you're misunderstanding their post. Moron.

Well, considering this thread is talking about the spill in the Gulf, and you brought up foreign oil companies are going to drill if we don't, I just wanted to show you that this was caused by a foreign company.

All 3 of 'em.

As far as sticking a straw in the pipe? It ain't working. Only 20 percent is being pumped to the ship, the other 80 percent is still pumping into the Gulf.

Wanna know why they are coming up with such stupid ideas? They don't want to do the one that would actually solve the problem.............drop a dome over the spill, pump the thing full of cement and seal the thing shut.

They don't want to do that though. They want to do a "junk shot" of golf balls and shredded rubber tires to plug the hole. Wanna know why?

Easier to re-drill that way. It's all about greed and profit, without any regard given to the environment.

What the hell kind of spin is that. The world's biggest economy uses 25% of the oil. We are the world's biggest economy.

It is simple. We use 25% of the world's oil. We have 3% of the world's reserves. We will either continue to use oil at this rate, and end up crashing as the world's oil production peaks. or we face reality, and do a rapid, and somewhat painful, switch to energy we can produce ourselves.

I think that as the vast plume of oil enters the Loop Current, that the resultant damage will put an end to any further offshore drilling. And, as far as international waters are concerned, when it comes to endangering what we have left of the East Coast, we are still the worlds only superpower.

If the oil continues to spew much longer, and as the damage starts showing up on shore, the government will be forced to take over. Once again, a group of private corperations will have forced the government to step in and spend billions to make up for their greed and carelessness.

The dome Idea was tried and failed. And I believe they have already began a relief well, or have plans for it, but it will take 3 months. No matter what they plug it with they won't reopen the same hole. they can hit the same oil drilling a mile away. At least that's the way I understand it.

This administration would love nothing better than to take over completely.

You understand it correctly. This will only work if the Hurricane season cooperates. Murphy's you know.

The more this leak goes on, the more it appears that we do not know the full extents of damage that is being done and will be done. It looks like a great deal of the oil is hovering below the surface while we have been focusing on the oil on the surface and washing up on the beach. Nothing like this (well leaking at this rate a mile down) has ever happened, so no one has ever seen plums of oil 10 miles long. It is scary where this may be going.

Last I heard, ten miles long, three miles wide, and 300 ft. deep. And either already in the Loop Current, or only three miles from it.

Too bad. Key West had some beautiful waters for catching langusta lobster and beautiful reefs for skin diving in.

I liked that town.

This is Obama's 9/11.... mark my words we will get government control after this like nothing ever before. We will get cap and trade life tax. And then no matter what we will paying for every single breath we take for as long as we remain ignorant and refuse to see the truth.... God help us all, we have sold our children into a life tax because of an accident.... At least I will be able to say I was against it....
