BP makes giant oil find in Gulf of Mexico | Reuters

London-based BP Plc said it had made a "giant" oil discovery in the Gulf of Mexico, reaffirming the area's importance to Western oil majors who are increasingly barred from investing in the world's richest oil prospects.

BP said in a statement on Wednesday that it had made the find at its Tiber Prospect in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The well was drilled in Keathley Canyon block 102.

Further appraisal will be required to ascertain the volumes of oil present, BP said, but a spokesman said the find could be bigger than its Kaskida discovery which has over 3 billion barrels of oil in place.

but i'm sure we won't be able to touch it because American Oil is obviously evil

First, a moment of silence for all of the velicoraptors who died oh so long ago to make this massive oil field. There must have been billions of them hanging out together.

Second, let's make a post card of all the Chinese offshore platforms that will drill this massive field of "Fossil fuels"

Wow, 3 billion, so much? Let's see, the US uses 21million a day, isn't that like almost 5 months worth?

And who owns it? Oh, not us? That's right. The US leases the land to oil companies, they get the oil and then they put it on the open market so we compete with the rest of the world. And if the price drops? They just hold on to it until the price goes back up.

Ok, no news here. Move along people, to something interesting.

Sorry to learn your head didn't make it out of the 6th grade. What's even more pathetic is that you represent the mindset of most individuals when it comes to the technical aspects of the petroleum industry.

There is still A LOT of oil in the world. Its a matter of finding it and getting to it cheaply.

Yes there is. The problem is that most of the easy oil is gone or on its way to being gone. What is left is going to be much more expensive to extract, and this is going to drive prices sky high long before we actually run out of oil. On top of that, with China, India, and many other parts of Asia increasing consumption, there will be no way to keep up with demand. We are much closer to $10 per gallon gasoline than most think.

Their motivation, two words, alternative fuels. Big oil is quite transparent.
