It's interesting to note that the CPUSA (communist party) made major inroads into American politics during the 30's. The Hollywood movie titled "Bound for Glory" was about entertainer Woodie Guthrie trying to organize the depression rabble into a socialist movement. It's ironic that his son's activism centered around drug abuse.
