What McCain Should Do Next - WSJ.com

snip..

In the coming weeks, he needs to lay out a bold domestic reform program. He gave a taste on energy, but with a few missteps. He should appear in front of manufacturing plants where jobs depend on affordable energy, small businesses affected by fuel prices, and farms hurt by skyrocketing fertilizer costs -- and not in front of oil rigs. He needs to describe the consequences of specific domestic policy decisions. He must explain how his proposals on energy, health care, jobs and education will make a difference for ordinary families.

Mr. McCain also needs to elevate his arguments. It's not only that he opposes tax increases and Mr. Obama favors them. Mr. McCain must also make the principled case that there should be a limit to what government can take from its citizens. This argument will appeal to a large majority of voters. The top income tax rate is 35% and, according to the Tax Foundation, 89% of Americans believe that government should take no more than 30% from anyone's paycheck.

McCain's problem is that the number of people who pay 35% is far exceeded in mumbers by those who pay less, or nothing.

Those people can see that those who pay 35% are far from hurting, while those who pay much less or nothing are.

The poor and working classes are not hurting because of Federal incomes taxation, they are hurting because of the state of the economy...the economy which is going so swimmingly for those who are paying most of the taxes.

If McCain came up with policies which would convince the majority of people who are hurting that they woould be better off, he'd win.

But the tickle down theory can only be sold so many times, before those upon whom the blessings of that policy never come, wake up and realize that that theory is economic hogwash.

mccain can't win, barack hussein obama can only lose. only time will tell if barack hussein obama self destructs his own campaign.

The people who need help could use a lot more trickle down than they are getting right now. Adam Smith knew of what he spoke.

Liberals like to pretend we have a capitalist system in place now (we do not and never have) and that capitalism is the reason for their suffering. (it is not and never has been)

What we fail to achieve in economic growth is in proportion to the degree to which we stray from the capitalist ideal. The more free the economy (the more capitalist) the more the growth for everyone. Even Bush is a mixed economy, left leaning tool to an extent. (he leans right on other issues no doubt) But prosperity comes from freedom and not from government control.

The US is probably the closest to pure capitalism but even it has to ameliorate it. A pure capitalist system would be unworkable, it has to be regulated, even minimally.

The US was the purist for a while however, that has not been the case for some time.

Freedom is not unworkable and need not be regulated.

Of course freedom has to be regulated. No society could operate without it and still be called a society. Where freedom is absolute and not regulated there's "nature red in tooth and claw" as Tennyson put it. Social and economic relations have to be regulated.

I seriously doubt you understand Adam Smith as well as you think you do.

Smith warned us about the potentital for corporations to pervert society, too, ya know?

Likewise his take on international trade was NOT unbridled FREE TRADE, which is, I suspect, what you think he advocated.

Adam Smith understood his society, and his advise to it, no doubt was brilliant.

But times have changed and we have to find our own way now.

McCain, with his attacks and senseless statements trying to slam Obama is only hurting himself. What happen to the independent minded McCain who was able to reach across the isle? Has he been "Roverized" to become a symbol to gain the vote of the neocons? Too bad...He will lose votes and possibly the Presidency because of that.

Never!

The misinformation you libertaians invent with your sophomoric understanding of history sure does make you look like damned fools at times.

Freedom is not unworkable and need not be regulated.

Tell that to the guys in jail who thought that robbing and murdering people was one of their god given personal freedoms, anarchist.
