House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are offering competing plans for Congress to lift the U.S.’s $14.3 trillion debt ceiling and avert default before an Aug. 2 deadline.

Boehner’s two-step plan would raise the U.S. borrowing limit by up to $1 trillion and later by $1.6 trillion while requiring larger spending cuts, according to Republican aides.

Reid’s proposal would cut $2.7 trillion in spending and give President Barack Obama the full $2.4 trillion in additional borrowing authority he seeks, enough to get through the 2012 elections.

Doesn't seem like much numbers difference between the two plans....the big kicker is Boehner's plan keeps the problem alive during election year....

As well it should be. The idea that these politicians should be able to sweep vital issues under the rug when running for reelection should be scandalous.

I want to see charts showing the debt and spending over time and as projected. Also how long SS & Medicare will last based on the proposed plans.

If they don't work throw them out next year. We don't need idiots who scam the voters.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Speaker John Boehner says Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid's plan to deal with the debt and avert a government default is "full of gimmicks."

Speaking to reporters Monday, Boehner praised the House GOP plan of an immediate $1.2 trillion in cuts and spending caps coupled with a $900 billion debt ceiling increase, followed by creation of a congressional committee charged with producing nearly $2 trillion in additional cuts.

Reid favors a $2.7 trillion package in spending cuts that would also push the government's borrowing authority through next year, a timeline that President Barack Obama and top Democrats are demanding.

Boehner said the Reid plan does not make any real changes in the spending structure of the government and fails to deal with Medicare and Medicaid.

Geeeeshhhh. Total Ineptitude. It's about time to buy a parachute and detach from this vertical ride to the bottom of the cliff.

"Failure is not an option"

Its not funny thinking about no health insurance as we age. It looks like the the choices will be unaffordable healthcare, or no healthcare because the vast majority of hospitals can't survive w/o Medicare. Its really not funny.

We need the pols to level with us and to get entitlements to a sustainable level. IMHO they need to impose a "Maximum Lifetime Benefit" to be sure we all get some level of care. If you didn't contribute your MLB is ZERO, get out, go away.

I hope your first statement is something to be taken seriously. I truly am worried about the rapid descension and decay of our government. You're correct. It truly is not funny.

Chris Matthews just advocated for bringing Bubba Clinton back to fix the entitlement mess. Are we, or actually, is Obama that desperate??

Bill Clinton the Tax/Entitlement/Budget Czar????
