Reconciling "Illegal" and "Immigrants" Is Difficult To Do
By Roland S. Martin, The Chicago Defender
April 14, 2006

The greatest grass-roots movement to ever change the American landscape was the Civil Rights Movement. The effort to end the oppressive and devastating impact of Jim Crow has been the model for any movement, whether it's gays and lesbians, and now, Latinos.

But what is most interesting is that African Americans are not fully embracing of the effort by mostly Latino immigrants because of one issue: illegal.

As hundreds of thousands of supporters of President George W. Bush's guest worker program have taken to the streets, media pundits, politicians and others have been stunned at the remarkable energy and passion on the issue. While there is an assumption that the nation's second largest minority -- African Americans -- will rally to the side of Latinos, that simply isn't happening.

It's because blacks are jealous that their "top minority" status is being supplanted by Hispanics.

Maybe they are getting whiplash from spinning around everytime they hear the word minority, only to discover that it's not them that are being talked about !

It might also be due to the fact that a bunch of the unheard hardworking blacks are really pissed off because the idea of the civil rights movement they fought for is being hijacked by a bunch of criminals with an entitlement complex.

You mean civil rights don't cross national borders? I thought MLK saw his movement as a world wide thing--not just for blacks.

Maybe the blacks feel that 150 years of slavery was ‘enough work’ and that the Latinos streaming illegally across our Southern border need to do their time, before bitching about citizenship?

Could it be they dont want any competition for government handouts?

No, its because Latinos work and Blacks don't for the most part, it makes them look worse than they already do and they resent that.

No prejudice here? C'mon OCA, most blacks that are employed, which are like 90% or more, work hard, many in positions of power. Want to tell me Colin or Condi don't work hard? My friend, Pete? We're not talking exceptions to the rule, they are the rule.

That is to take nothing away from the hardworking Mexicans/Hispanics/Whathaveyou, they too work hard. What is so difficult in distinguishing between legal/illegal?

You said it, Kathianne: The word "ILLEGAL" is the focal point of this problem. I think that's what Martin, who is black and writing for a black newspaper, was saying with his article.

This is the same perceived "prejudice" that Latinos have against first generation Asians. "Their kids take all the room for courses in college!"

No, asshole: They busted their ass - 18 hours a day - when they came here, most of them quite legally, and their children reap the benefits of that first generation’s sacrifice. And their children honor them, for the most part, by getting outstanding grades, and not drink themselves into oblivion and rape strippers while at school - dishonoring their entire families.

Yes - the Asians do make you look bad. Tough Shit. Get up off your dead ass and use the hundred or more hours you watch television or playing idiotic video games to better yourself and honor your parents.

Remember - most of your people have been here for well over a century.

What’s your excuse for not having captured ‘The American Dream’?

Among the nation’s black teens, fewer than 20 percent, age 16 to 19, were employed during 2003, an employment rate just half that of white teens;

Among 20 to 24 year old black men, employment rates averaged just 57 percent during the past three years, compared with an average of 80 percent employment in the late 1960s. The E/P (employment to population) ratio of young black men in 2003 lagged well behind the white male employment rate by nearly 20 percentage points;

In 2002, a full quarter of African-American men ages 20 to 64 were not employed at any point during the year. The year-round joblessness rate for black adult males in 2002 was twice as high as that of white and Hispanic males;

The year-round idleness rate for black men varies by age, educational attainment, and geographic location. Idleness rates in 2002 ranged from a low of 18 percent for those ages 35 to 44 to a high of nearly 42 percent for those 55 to 64. Forty-four percent of black men with no high school diploma were idle year-round versus 26 percent of high school graduates and only 13 percent of those with a bachelor’s or higher degree.

In every educational group, black males living in central cities were more likely to be idle year-round than their peers in the suburban segments of metropolitan areas.

And your point is?

I thought that this was an American issue and all Americans should be concerned about the detrimental effects of illegal aliens on our country. If this is the case then why should African-Americans rush to the aid of Latinos??? The problems that you've seen mostly whites in the media complaining about in areas w/ high populations of illegal aliens are being felt by blacks too. Furthermore there are many differences in the struggle between the civil rights struggles between blacks and the immigration issue today. The African American civil rights struggle was about finally achieving equality in the country that they were kidnapped and forced to come to as slaves and help build. The immigration civil rights issue is about latinos who've chosen to come here illegally and now demand citizenship and equality when their lack of those two things is directly related to their illegal entry of the country. That's not the same.

Exactly. And that makes Hobbits comment also true. The blacks don't want the mexican illegal aliens highjacking their struggle, basically hoping that the struggle of the blacks would give them a boast.

The mexican issue really isn't about immigration. They just want to come here and work, and then send their illegaly gotten gains back to mexico. That's not immigrating in any sense of the word. The mexican problem here in America is more of an invasion. The largest invasion of any country by another in the history of the world. This country belongs to the black people every bit as much as it does whites. They've fought our wars and helped build it. They've got every reason not to back the illegal aliens.
