A few years back I took a Fair Housing class. In this class the issue of same race discrimination was a subject. A chapter was dedicated to this scenario, because the courts have a tough time dealing with it. Race on race discrimination was the most prevalent amongst blacks landlords. The excuses that were given where "When I rent to blacks over whites, the chances of getting paid goes down, the probability of force eviction goes up and they tend to trash the house and steal whatever is not bolted down!"
My teacher went off on how wrong this was and we had to discuss how to deal with such a complex problem.
Then a Kenyan immigrant raised his hand and told of his experiences. As an undergrad he drove a taxi. He said all the other black cab drives told him to avoid picking up other blacks. He ignored it and said that was a mistake. He stated that blacks are much much more likely to run out on the cab, short change the fare, leave trash behind, are rude, threaten violence, always bring him to bad neighborhoods and never tip. On top of that the 2 times he was rob was by black passengers. After only a few months he stopped picking up blacks. He said he felt bad at first, but he said he would do it again.
My liberal teacher's jaw dropped, and asked with caution, "Did all the cabbies do this?" The reply "No, the non-Black cabbies always picked up Blacks out of fear of getting in trouble."
The point here is why is this tolerated? Should it be tolerated? If your a cabbie and more likely to get robbed, stiffed or no tip, should you be able to do racially profile your customers? I 100% agree with no discrimination in housing, but what about in cabbie driving? And why do we allow well off black landlords to discriminate against black would be tenants?
