AL-KHALIL, (PIC)-- A spokesman for the Student Islamic Bloc at Birzeit university said on Friday that they will suspend their sit in which they started eight days ago and will not go on hunger strike as was planned to start on Saturday because they were promised by the Freedoms Committee and the Independent Commission for Human Rights.

The source said that a delegation comprising head of the Freedoms Committee, Khalil Assaf and two representatives of the ICHR met with students participating in the sit in on Thursday evening and promised them that the PA security agencies will not touch them and will not summon them. Assaf told them that if the security agencies reneged on those promises then the students would be right to protest and that he would join them in their protest.

Spokesman for the student bloc said that if the promises were not carried out the students would go back to their protest.

A group of university students affiliated with the Islamic bloc started a sit in at the university eight days ago to protest the arrests and summonses to members of the bloc by the PA security as there was about 27 cases of arrests and summonses. The affected students lose time at university and their academic progress is affected. Some students have been at the university for many years but could not finish because of arrests and detention periods they spent at Israeli occupation jails and PA jails.
