More vaccines for poor could save 6.4m lives: study
Fri, Jun 10, 2011 - Millions of children’s lives and billions of dollars could be saved if vaccines were more widely available in 72 of the world’s poorest countries, research published yesterday said.
In a series of studies in the Health Affairs journal, public health experts and scientists projected that if 90 percent of children in those countries were immunized, more than US$151 billion in treatment costs and lost productivity could be saved over 10 years, producing economic benefits of US$231 billion. About 6.4 million children could be saved, they found. Yet one study, conducted by the donor-funded Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) and the Results for Developmental Institute, found that poor countries would be hard pressed to pay for expanded vaccine programs without help from outside donors.

The Health Affairs series was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a US$34 billion fund devoted largely to health projects in poor countries. The Gates Foundation is also a major funder of GAVI. GAVI, which funds bulk-buy vaccination programs for nations that cannot afford Western prices, is holding a pledging conference in London next week when it wants to close a US$3.7 billion funding gap for its commitments until 2015. Childhood vaccinations against diseases such as pneumococcal pneumonia, Haemophilus influenzae type b, or Hib disease, diphtheria, pertussis, or whooping cough, tetanus, measles and rotavirus are routine in wealthier countries, but many poor countries have little or no access to these products.

Several leading drugmakers said on Monday they would cut some of their vaccine prices for developing countries to try to sustain supplies via the GAVI. Vaccines against diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis are within three to five years of entering the market. “Without major assistance from international donors, the poorest countries will be hard pressed to pay the costs to reach all of their children with life-saving vaccines,” said Helen Saxenian of the Results for Development Institute in Washington, one of authors of that study.

Two other Health Affairs studies analyzed the potential benefits of children in the 72 countries getting all current routine vaccinations, plus malaria. They found it would save 6.4 million lives over 10 years and that this would translate into an economic value of US$231 billion. “Governments of developing countries constantly face the challenge of determining how much they should spend to prevent premature deaths and suffering in their populations,” Ozawa said. “This research should inform these kinds of policy decisions.”

Babies to get 'gut bug vaccine'
10 November 2012 - Prof David Salisbury, Director of Immunisation, DoH: "We expect this will save around £20m"
Babies in the UK are to be vaccinated against a tummy bug which causes tens of thousands of cases of vomiting and diarrhoea each year. Rotavirus infection is rarely fatal in the UK. Using the vaccine has cut cases and reduced hospital admissions in other countries, including the US. The Department of Health said the vaccine would be offered from September 2013 and would be given in two doses after two and three months. The bug is very infectious and causes about 140,000 cases every year in the under-fives. About 14,000 will need hospital treatment. Experts believe that vaccination would cut the number of cases in half and lead to 70% fewer hospital visits.

Distress

Prof David Salisbury, the director of immunisation at the Department of Health, said the virus "spreads very easily" and causes distress for children and families. "Many people think of diarrhoea as something that all children get and that you have to put up with. But there is a way to protect children from this. I'd encourage all parents of young children to accept this vaccine when the programme begins next year." He added the vaccine - which is administered in drops - had been "used very extensively" with "huge trials demonstrating both its safety and its effectiveness". It is expected to cost £25m a year to vaccinate 840,000 children a year. However, the government believes cutting the number of cases will save the NHS £20m.

Prof Adam Finn, from the University of Bristol, said: "Rotavirus causes large epidemics of diarrhoea and vomiting in babies and young children every winter and with it, misery for thousands of families across the country. "I'm pleased that another unpleasant illness that affects most children is going to be brought under control. It will also help hospitals cope in the busy winter months by reducing pressure on beds and front-line staff."

Dr David Elliman, from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said the vaccine would prevent a "huge amount of suffering" and save the NHS money. "This vaccine will mean less pressure both on distressed parents who have to care for their children and of course the GPs and hospital services who are treating them," he said.

But do you believe capitalist Health Care is superior to Socialist Health Care? You might have already buried the needle in your brain.
Apparently that's what Billy Boy wants to do. Can't make those vaccines mandatory if there is still private medicine and people have choices.

Choices is my point.

1.Live shorter lifespan, have more children die at birth = Capitalist Health Care with less survivors.
2.Live longer lifespan, have more surviving children at birth = Socialist Health Care with more survivors.

Which item more resembles taking the less survivors vaccine? GET IT NOW??

The problem with your scenario is it's wrong. Socialist countries have much higher death rates for those who are sick. The mediterranean diet helps people live longer lives as well as gentics but when you are sick you are better off here in the States than in any socialist country. That's why the Canadian politician came HERE to have her breast cancer surgery instead of waiting 8 months to use her system. Had she waited she would have died.

It's as simple as that.
