Moore, OK
At home, I got a couple of viruses in the last month or so, even though I had Norton antivirus software on my system and ESET – both were installed on my system by my ex.

I am looking at antivirus software programs; I want to pay because my experience with free software has not been all so wonderful. I looked at a few and liked Cyberdefender and PC Tools.

I liked that Cyberdefender seems to be a more complete package, covering antivirus, Trojans, spyware, id theft protection.

ESET, also had a nice user interface, but I had a hard time figuring out which would be the best version for me.

I also liked Cyberdefender is a public company, but is it a good antivirus software program? Better then ESET?

Avast! It works great..is free..and not a resource hog.

You can also buy Avast! too..you won't get better IMO..and it doesn't tend to interfere when it shouldn't like so many do.

I use TREND MICRO...used to be known as PC'illin. I've used them since 1996...and we use them extensively at my workplace.

My Network is protected by Trend and had caught many infiltrators. And a nice touch too is that they have a Toolbar that shows if a website you're on is safe...and it can also watchdog your wireless network...and it has keystoke encryption. Also it knows what applications you're running and does not intrude by looking for updates.

There is also a feature that allows you optimize applications...and it prevents viruses from running when you connect devices such as external USB drives.

They publish reports all the time...and if you go to their site? They have some pretty neat free tools. Oh? And they will work in conjunction with Microsoft's suite of Anti-virus/Firewall.

Give it a look?

I assume you're using Windows.
1. Stop using IE and switch to Firefox
(Add on's: Ghostery, Adblock and WOT)
That will take care of two thirds of your problem.
2. Antivirus - Avast - free but 80% better than any Symantic program on the market. (Also functions as a very effective fire wall for internet browsing and e-mail filtering).
3. Anti spyware: Spywareblaster, also free and very effective as a second line of defense.
4. Stop going to porn sites.
5. Switch to a Linux distro and do away with all the above.
(Just my opinion).

LOL @ Ringel05

I like Malwarebytes for malware/spyware.

I like Malwarebytes for malware/spyware.

I like that one also, have it on my wife's Vista (ugh!) machine.

I was a beta tester for Malwarebytes, so I am partial. I have it on my W7, but actually after I stopped the nags on Vista, I didn't mind it too much. I like W7 a lot.

I use FF of course..and have Adblock, what do Ghostery, and WOT do?

ETA: Okay never mind. I looked them up..:)

My laptop and 'old' puter still runs XP. My new one that I'm currently on (home build) is running Linux, Mint 8. In about 6 months I'll buy my wife a new HD or SSD and load W7, make it the master and set the old one as the slave. That way she can access all her stuff without risking her data with an upgrade.
I may do a format/W7 new install on my old puter but I haven't decided yet, could be hardware conflict issues with W7.

I had XP on my desktop. Vista on my Laptop. I just finished building a brand new computer, actually finished over the weekend. Put in W7. Yes, I am geeky...love that stuff.
So have a clean install..and all new parts. Like you said, would have had hardware conflicts, so went on and got all new. I was due.
Just prior to that I upgraded my Laptop to W7.

Linux: I hesitate. Software. ADOBE and everything else. Any conflicts, support?

I always wonder; how the fuck can a browser and software tell if a site is safe?

id theft protection? who would try to steal your id?

Question: how do you know you had a virus? What were the virus names?

While I surf the net? Trend looks at the site(s) I go to for threats.

LINK I can also request they look at a site.

And ID meaning names, passwords, logons, CC numbers... all settable.

ScreenShot (My Laptop) Note the Trend Toolbar? "Trusted Page"?

Hope that answers your question?

IE8 I don't like. Some folks I know use 'Google Chrome'.

Mint 8 - 90% of all codexs built in including Adobe (I think) and Flash.

I'll take a look at Mint 8, because I would rather do a crash course in learning Linux than Windows.

thanks
