Beattyville, KY – The White Man's Detroit

The Guardian seems to be making a real effort at showing the dark underside of the USA in these series of articles about poverty-stricken American towns. Here's their latest:

A reservation town fighting alcoholism, obesity and ghosts from the past

This talks about Gila River Indian Community in Arizona. And it ain't all that poor anymore, bub!

Seems they got a couple of casinos. Now, members of the tribe are getting free land, free houses, and free food.

It's also the home of Ira Hayes.

Anyhow, the story headlines don't exactly lay out the whole story and is really just another Guardian stab at it's American cousins @ A reservation town fighting alcoholism, obesity and ghosts from the past

I agree with one poster who guessed that although the town is impoverished, probably the crime rate (for serious violent crime) is lower than it would be in certain notorious cities up north where there are also few jobs and many people on welfare.

If that is accurate, I think that such a situation speaks volumes.

I personally feel sorry for those people in that town and think that they should continue to receive welfare as long as people up north receive welfare. Fair is fair. I am guessing that some of the young people will be moving to other areas.

red states don’t have big cities like Detroit chicago and New York.

But I’ll admit it’s not as bad down south but here’s a fact. All over the south there are really poor black communities right next to a lot of white middle class communities. Is this what republican policies create? Why are your black neighbors so much poorer than your white communities?
