BAYER reponsible for Pesticide as Cause of Massive Bee Deaths

From the opening post linked article:
The EPA has based its approval of neonicotinoids on the fact that the amounts found in pollen and nectar were low enough to not be lethal to the bees -- the only metric they have to measure whether to approve a pesticide or not. But studies have shown that at low doses, the neonicotinoids have sublethal effects that impair bees' learning and memory. The USDA's chief researcher, Jeff Pettis, told me in 2008 that pesticides were definitely "on the list" as a primary stressor that could make bees more vulnerable to other factors, like pests and bacteria.

"effects that impair bees' learning and memory."

Umm lets eat some honey with that pesticide in it or just in our food that was sprayed with it?

Or pay more for 'organic.' Pray they aren't lying.

Perhaps or not the pesticides are harmful to bees. Perhaps in wrong amounts they are. Perhaps only on certain days, when the rains fail to fall as predicted? In any case, what's perhaps harmful to the bees, may or may not be to humans.

I really sweat this guys. Especially when I was reading a report that dudes were looking at neutering mosquoitoes.

Now as much as I hate them and ours are nothing short of freaking bald eagles coming in for a bite a chomp a hello that was my arm type of mosquito would you like ketchup with that bite?

Bees and mosquitos are crucial as pollinators. We have to have them.

I do a lot of fun stuff on politics but I'm a serious gardener. We need these beasties.

I will be spreading a lot of wild flower seeds in a wooded area early this year.

Beleive it or not you could be more effective. Nicotiana. Its the best.

#1 beautiful in any way shape or form There is 8 inches to 3 feet.

#2 omg the perfume is to die for from the plants

#3 you will not only *ahem* bring about love life but you will bring about *love* life every where.

I'm very worried about bee colonies. The next best we have as pollinators are mosquitoes.

I truly worry. We have to have them.

The Republican Argument:

You can't believe anything a scientist has to say. They have an agenda. Besides, many are "over educated". Besides, bees "sting". We need to get rid of them anyway. And that darned EPA. Always protecting "bugs". We need to get rid of that too. Let farmers "farm". Stop coddling plants. They will grow without bees. Besides, plants love carbon dioxide.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that beekeepers started to notice a problem with bee populations in 2006. Since then, over 3 million colonies in the U.S. alone have collapsed. Scientists world-wide are investigating the effects of pesticides, stress, nutrition, diseases, habitat changes, pests and radiation on bees. Our lives are intricately connected to that of bees, so the implications of this crisis are immense.

Changes in Our Food Supply

Bees make about 60,000 flights to collect enough nectar for 1 tsp. of honey. As bees die, there is a decrease in the supply of honey, and a correlated increase in honey prices. While seeking nectar, bees pollinate many plants, thereby contributing to plants' fertilization, seed production and plant survival to the next generation.

Many of the fruits and vegetables we eat rely on such pollination. Watermelon, lemon, soybean, tomato, cranberry and vanilla are among the items in the long list of foods that will not be available to us without pollinator bees.

Changes in Animals' Food Supply
Bees are such crucial players in the food chain that many animals will suffer by bee deaths. Lizards, spiders, birds and some insects eat bees. Bees pollinate plants that other animals eat.

Berries, seeds and fruits are essential for birds, and therefore are also essential for the animals who eat birds.

Bees pollinate clover and alfalfa, which supply protein to cows' diets. If cows lose this food supply, people will not have cheese, milk and beef.

In fact, some scientist estimate that after removing foods that bees directly or indirectly effect, our food supply will consist of only breads and oats.

Consequences of Honey Bee Deaths | eHow.com

We know what bees do. Honey Bee hives have been killed by a mite infestation and American corporations have been developing stuff that kills the mites. Why is that concept so alien to the radical left? It's not surprising during a socialist administration that we pay government "experts" to blame the people who are doing their best to fix the problem.

Ohio has now been added to the list of states that have officially lost 100% of their wild honey bees. I told a man that had worked with bees for 50 years, that we had tons of them here where I am, and he didn't believe me. I believe they have come from swarming from the supers of a beekeeper that lives less than a mile away, and has had hives for years.
I was buying most of the supers from the man because he was losing his site. He kept a few. I called him the following spring to ask a bee question, and he was happy that mine were still alive. His all died. Mine all died the following year. Mine had mites. They had been there awhile, because I also saw adults with deformities. The larvae cause the damage while maturing in the cell that is capped after the mite egg is laid. But mites are only one cause of colony collapse. There are several and the gov. is giving grants to universities to solve the problems. That's good. Bugs aren't as efficient as bees in pollination. They are developing a super bee that can detect the mites in the cell and kill it before they cap it.
Luckily, I got a notice from the town I have a house we're renovating, and the whole back wall is filled with the suckers. Holy shit. They gave us till Spring to remove them, because they are endangered, and docile creatures. I'm thrilled. And I haven't seen a mite on one yet. That doesn't mean they won't get them when I move them out here. :(

this is serious situation that needs to be addressed......Bees are pretty important to our ecosystem...........

Bees practically hold the hold thing together by action of their polination. Without Bees, we are in serious trouble.

rdean stop being an asshole. read my posts. stop being an idiot. please.:eusa_angel: I'm asking nice.

this is a true issue that goes both sides of the aisle here.

Somedays I'd like to think we can work together. I know. Slap me upside the head as soon as I post it takes a village:lol:

but for true I really worry about pollinators. omg I need cable.

Honey bees are killed by an insect mite, not by chemicals.

do you know idiotic this conclusion is?

what it assumes is that somehow, for some reason, this insect mite all of a sudden, and very recently, evolved the capacity to kill honey bees, or that some recent but fundamental change in conditions allowed them the upper hand, whereas for throughout all of the bees natural history prior to the last 50 years, they faired okay. This makes absolutely no sense. The ONLY plausible explanation as a factor, in human interruption in a natural process. The introduction of massive amounts of chemicals into the bee's 'workplace' seems a far likelier explanation. I know you have the desire to paint all corporations as saints and job-givers, but that nothing to do with their effects on the natural world, which more often than not, is incredibly negative and destructive, because there is no cost accounting for externalities until it is too late. Now, it is getting to that late hour.

Excellent remark...

Yes, let's limit the discussion to what we no, and disqualify all assumption...........................

whatever that means......hopefully the Scientific community will look at it a little more seriously....

I agree Harry.

I love how as soon as you mention the name of a corporation, the rightwing tards on the board reflexively stagger out like zombies to defend it.

Is the cannabis crop in danger? That might account for the hysteria on the left.

Actually, the great thing about cannabis is that it doesn't require pesticides. It is why we, as a country, should remove the ridiculous restriction on industrial hemp.

Oh, and all of our crops are in danger if we don't have any pollinators like bees and bats.

I am more concerned about the decimation of the bee than I am about a lie called man made global warming.

Bayer?

You mean the same people who owned the original patent on Heroin (AKA Diacetylmorphine)?

That wonder drug was sold as the drug tht was going to help morphine addicts kick their addiction.
