The Finnish-built Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid has quickly become the luxury ride of choice for rich folks who want to project a green-friendly image. A few of them will have to wait, however, after 16 of the cars caught fire and exploded after being flooded by the storm surge from Hurricane Sandy.

The $100,000 hybrids were sitting on the dockside in Port Newark, New Jersey after being unloaded from the ship that brought them from Finland. Apparently the cars were submerged by salt water, and then they caught fire and eventually exploded.

Fisker has issued a statement saying that nobody was injured, and that the cars were not being charged at the time. Port Newark remains off limits following the storm, putting any further investigation on hold.

This is not the first time Karmas have caught on fire. Back in May a car spontaneously burst into flames when parked in a Texas homeowner's garage, and in August one caught fire when parked outside a California supermarket. The August case was eventually traced to a problem not related to the car's drive system. Still, if I owned one, I would probably invest in a small fire extinguisher.

Heard there weren't any Chevy Volts there. No one wants to export them. But if they had been there imagine the fireworks between the two. Obama's Green assault gone wrong.

I hear Barry is sensing windmills, charging stations and solar panels to Staten Island along with loads of Kashi and water.

There's another huge downside to electric cars that dealers won't tell you about.

A midsize Tesla electric car costs about $50,000. The batteries only last a few years and cost $40,000 to replace. You will NEVER balance the savings in gas with the extra cost of the electric car.

But wait, it gets worse.

The batteries in an electric car need to be maintained at a specific temperature range. To accomplish this, they have a circulation system which keeps the batteries heated in cold weather and cooled in hot weather. This means the car's batteries are being drained as they maintain that temperature range while the car is not in use. Your car is "running" even when you aren't using it.

It has already happened more than once that someone with a Tesla has parked their car at an airport parking lot in a hot southern climate, and when they returned from their trip, their batteries were completely drained. When they get that far gone, they cannot be fixed and have to be replaced.

$40,000.

Some of the Tesla people have a name for a car that is in this condition.

They call it a "brick".

A $50,000 brick.

So Europeans are using America as a testing lab for their untested motor cars and blaming it as Karma?

Naughty, naughty!
