The drop house arrests started on Monday about 10 a.m. with a call from a Douglas resident who told the Border Patrol about suspicious activity in an east Douglas neighborhood, said Border Patrol spokesman Omar Candelaria. Douglas Police and Border Patrol found 44 illegal immigrants inside two trailers. All of them were from Mexico, and 35 were men, five women and four children, he said.

It's likely smugglers led several small groups to the trailers and were holding them until they were ready to take them deeper into the country, Candelaria said.

The apprehension of 67 illegal border crossers occurred early Monday morning in a remote area south of Arivaca and close to the U.S.-Mexico border, he said. Agents using a mobile surveillance system spotted a group of about 90 people and called for help from a Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine helicopter.

Agents apprehended 51 people and agents in the helicopter helped located 16 others, Candelaria said. The rest in the group got away.

Through the first five months of fiscal year 2010, agents in the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector had made 88,453 apprehensions, up 9 percent from the 81,114 apprehensions at the same time last year, agency figures show.
