Does anyone know the double-super-secret counterintuitive spyword uncheck thingy that disables Avast basic antivirus? I did find it once, but am unable to remember where the checkmark was and unable to find the same answer using Google. It won't even shut down using Task Manager.

The reason I'm trying to disable Avast is, it's blocking anything I try to send in Gmail (only in Gmail) with an error popup -- "Oops... a server error occurred and your email was not sent. (#007)". Won't even save a draft. When I was able to disable Avast before, the mail went right through. Updates have been done including Firefox. Didn't address the issue.

Trying to navigate into the convoluted intestines of the Avast blogosphere is like a full-time job. Can't be taking hours to figure this out, restarting the whole system etc every time I need to send a damn piece of mail.

TIA

You mean to tell me there is something you DON'T know??? Color me shocked :poke:

To address your problem at hand.....I've only run Avast once in past years & didn't have a problem loading, running or disabling. So IDK :dunno:

Open task manager and shut it down. Make it not start up when you start Windows then uninstall it.
Windows key + services.msc then disable everything Avast-ish. On reboot, uninstall.

Oh wait, this is Pogo. Carry on!

Yyyyeah uhh the fact that Task Imaginer won't do it is kiiiiiinda why I mentioned in the OP that Task Imaginer won't do it. See if you can keep up. Nor am I gonna uninstall it. Just wanna send a damn piece of email.

I have eventually found the way to uncheck "self-defense mode" which got the mail through. But I'd rather it didn't block the mail in the first place. Meanwhile thanks so much for your contribution of absolutely nothing. Your post is very important to us and one of our specialists will be with you "shortly".

Task bar, far right side, right click on the Avast icon, hover on Avast shields control then select which disable you want from the menu.

Not sure on the Avast software but a wild guess, try typing in "ye matey".

September 19th is 'talk like a pirate day'. What's a pirate's favorite letter? Arrhhh!

What does a Chinese pirate say?

"ELLLL!"

Tanks, much.

Any idea why it suddenly started blocking outgoing Gmail? Been doing this a week or two.

Right click on the Avast icon again, click Open Avast user interface, click on Settings (at bottom of pop up), click on components and turn off Mail Shield.
Since you're using gmail it has it's own shield and the two are probably in conflict.
You'll probably have to restart you're computer.

Already tried that, didn't work. :(

If all else fails, take one nylon stocking, a spoon and a magnet and put them all into a paper bag. Go outside and wave it over your head while you scream like a chicken.

Get back to Mail Shield in settings, click 'Customize' then unselect 'scan outgoing mail'.

I'm afraid there is no "customize". Just "Mail Shield" with a checkbox, or or off and neither way works.

Thanks for this latest reminder of why you're on the Ignore list.

Just to the right of the on/off should be a gear symbol. :dunno:

No gear icon, and no on/off, nope.

Actually "on/off" was what I was originally looking for. Had to uncheck "Self-Defense mode" (and that's already in Settings/Troubleshooting). There's no enable/disable option as such.

Avast keeps trying to sell me on Google Chrome. If I were a cynic I'd be inclined to think they're causing other browsers to stop working in order to sell that.
