The idiot reported just HAD to throw in a sentence about how bad it is in Iraq today, but this is a great news story.

Australian Rescued by Iraqi, U.S. Forces

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi and U.S. forces, acting on a tip, raided a dangerous Sunni neighborhood Wednesday and freed an Australian hostage who was hidden beneath a blanket, officials said. Elsewhere, 38 people died in insurgent attacks, including 25 killed when a bomber dressed in Iraqi army uniform blew himself up in a mess hall.

Douglas Wood, a 64-year-old engineer who is a longtime resident of Alamo, Calif., said he was "extremely happy and relieved to be free again," according to a message read by Australia's counterterrorism chief Nick Warner.

Wood emerged from the compound from which he'd been freed wearing a tan dishdasha, or traditional Arabic robe, with his head shaved, looking tired but smiling broadly.

"Wood is now resting comfortably and is in a safe location in Baghdad," said Warner, who added that he spent much of the day with the former captive.

Great. Looks like our guys are starting to get input from the locals. Once that gains ground, the terrorists will find it much harder to operate.

From what I heard it was even better news. Iraqi troops were just backed up by US forces. That's where we want it to be!

Quotes from the linked article:

"He has been blindfolded, handcuffed, he has not been well looked after," Australia's counterterrorism chief Nick Warner said after Wood was freed from a house in one of Baghdad's most dangerous neighborhoods."

"Insurgents kidnapped and killed two senior officers in Kirkuk's anti-terrorist squad, along with their driver and the son of one of the men. The bodies of all four were found dumped streetside in the northern city with gunshots to their heads."

GULAG! where is AI on this one? :flameth:

Manu, you are confused. It is only the US that is supposed to be 'better.' Of course if the Euro pact could haul us before the ICC, they will surely do so, joined by AI.

Good News from Iraq, Reuters Despairs

You might think the rescue of Australian hostage Douglas Wood would merit its own article, but al-Reuters combines it with a heaping helping of bad news and serves up a good example of MSM “Big But” journalism: Australian freed in Iraq; bombs kill nearly 40.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi troops found and freed an Australian held hostage in Baghdad on Monday, the latest of several recent success in recovering foreign captives.

BUT two bomb attacks on Iraqi troops and police, including one in which a soldier may have blown himself up with nearly 30 other troops, showed insurgents remain a deadly force.

Iraqi soldiers came across Douglas Wood, a 63-year-old U.S.-based engineer, lying tied up under a blanket as they searched a house they suspected was being used by gunmen.

Coming four days after the release of a French journalist and three weeks after Romanian reporters who were held by the same group, there was speculation that security services may be closing in on kidnap gangs — although it appeared Wood’s discovery may have owed more to chance than intelligence.
