Our beloved Serena showed up on the courts at the Australian Open looking like a big, fat, brown and green tub of goo. Weighing in at AT LEAST 180 lbs, there was nary a comment about her weight or the conspicuous display of it via her hideous outfit.

Until the curious meltdown that ended the tournament for her (as always, it was the result of a phantom injury - this time, to her ankle), she wore this ridiculous one-piece "garment" that seemed intended to magnify all of her majestic, corpulent post-baby bulk.

In this day of hyper-sensitive public personalities combined with nothing-barred tennis apparel (men or women), and - I suppose - many of the "stars" wearing clothing of their own design in order to bulk up meager tennis earnings, we have a world where the players look more and more ridiculous and the commentators are in effect prohibited from commenting on it.

The only exception I've seen and heard is McEnroe's comments on Nadal going sleeveless again.

Since most Americans are fat, and even women amateur tennis players can be included in this observation, why couldn't Serena adopt an outfit that made her look LESS fat, rather than one that magnified it?

To quote the Wicked Witch of the West, "What a world, what a world."

Loose fitting top, short skirt. Just like women have been wearing to play tennis for generations.
