Apparently the condition is rare enough that nobody in Australia knows how to do it, that's why.

It also appears there's something left out of this story.

>> Dr Joel Geldman, who has performed the specialist procedure at least 175 times in California, including the famous case of Wesley Warren's 45kg scrotum, has even offered to waive his fees for the operation. <<
--- so why does he need another $19,000 on top of the 46k they have? Flights don't cost that much.

The doctor is waiving his fee, doesn't mean the hospital and lab is doing the same.

When I lived in Seattle my doctor was from Canada and I asked him why he came here.
"I wanted to practice REAL medicine" was his reply.
I told him I did not understand that. And his reply.
" In all of B.C. we have ONE MRI, in Seattle alone you have five".
This was 30 years ago but the point was clear. Social medicine may have the people but competition meant those people had to have the equipment.

Many Canadians come here for the healthcare because the decreased wait time COULD save your life. You can just glance at what the OP has written and see the reason. The American doctors largest was 45. The Aussie was at 65 and still waiting.

My son in law is an emergency room physician in Oregon and wants to go to Europe to practice real medicine. He claims that they are much more advanced in new treatments and therapies and he wants to spend time learning that so that he can come back here and update what he calls our tired system. Go figure.

Profit or living expenses for his family?

It's one of those things where you need to go there and do it before you can call it. What you hear is seldom what you find.

He's been there, it's why he is motivated to go. There are many things wrong with foreign healthcare, but their advances and new techniques cannot be ignored

They don't have to move here -- all he needs is the operation. And the doc offered to waive fees. Seems to me that leaves the flight and a place to stay enough time to recover to fly back. Even if he brings a caretaker that ain't gonna run $65,000. :dunno:

I've heard that too from a friend with prostate probs. He could fly to Europe and get some whizbang technology that doesn't exist here. I don't remember the details of exactly what it is.

Yep, our FDA does a good job but they slow down the access to technology. England is way advanced on the treatment of melanoma, France leads in prostate and certain cancers. Fascinating stuff and makes me a little jealous that we have to wait.

i find that hard to believe....maybe were he practices,in Orange County California UCI Med Center has Doctors all over the world calling there to have some of their specialist verify their findings on their patients....and my wifes Doctor at UCI is from Europe and came here because they dont have many of the newest machines and newest treatments, especially like they do at UCI...so i guess everyone has their opinion....my son is living in England right now and he told me there doesnt seem to be much of a difference .....
