My friend was in the Ninth Marines, third division, survived Iwo. Anyway when he used Semper Fi it meant: "I got mine how you making out". Is that still the way Semper Fi is used?

What a generation!

Doubt we'll see their kind again....

May I add another magnificent military endeavor that occurred on this day, August 17th?

480 BC This is the probable date of the beginning of the three day encounter at Thermopylae, in which Xerxes’ huge army was (temporarily) bottled up by a small force of Greeks, led by Leonidas and the famed Spartan 300. Their heroic sacrifice is encapsulated in Simonides’ lines:

Go tell the Spartan, passerby,
That here, obedient to their laws, we lie.

A Greek traitor, Ephialtes, knew about a path around Thermopylae, and showed the Persians how to outflank the Greeks: ephialtis is today the modern Greek word for “nightmare.”

Fighting to the end (Leonidas to his men: “Tonight we shall dine in Hades”), they slew over twenty thousand of the Persians. The time that Leonidas held up the Persians allowed the Greek fleet to wreak havoc on the Persian navy at Artemisium. The final battle of the Greco-Persian war was at Plataea in 479.

The raid was a failure, no intelligence was gained and the Japanese were not diverted from Guadalcanal. Not only that but Carlson left 12 of his men on the island to later be beheaded by the Japanese.

I prefer the other saying, engraved on a plaque at Thermopylae as well; when asked by a Persian envoy from King Xerxes to lay down their arms, Leonidas replied-

"Molon Labe".......translated-

"Come and take them"....

Evans Carlson was a peculiar character who tried to model his leadership after some sort of communist doctrine. He invented the term "Gung Ho" which generations of Marines eventually turned into a term for an overly military attitude. The Makin raid was hyped because we were losing the war in the Pacific after McArthur was the only soldier rescued from the debacle of Bataan and Corrigador. No Marine leaves his men behind but that's what Carlson did on Makin Is. True to form the FDR administration turned failure into media victory by awarding a MOH to MacArthur who lost his entire army and Carlson who achieved nothing but looked damned good doing it.

Anerica needed a morale boost and heroes are one way. Didn't we use the same thing with Iraq? Perhaps with A female soldier?
One of the first heroes after Pearl Harbor was an American pilot that dove his airplane into a Japanese ship,I think it was off the Phlippines. The story was fake.
Typical MacArthur, he denied the general that stayed behind on Bataan the MOH but accepted his for leaving or something.

After the invited attack on Pearl Harbor the FDR administration quickly took control of the media with a series of presidential orders and a confusing melange of alphabet commissions that often did nothing but promote the government agenda. Anything is possible if the media voluntarily supports or is forced to support every government statement, policy or atrocity. The FDR administration turned the incredible debacle of Bataan and Corregador around by feeding hype to the media about the alleged heroism of the commanding general who abandoned his troops. Carlson's raid was an abject failure in several ways but the FDR administration awarded medals to the Marine officer because it was good for the morale of the Country. The media writes the pop culture history books but in the freeist Country on the planet it's still possible to find the truth but sometimes it isn't easy and it's often uncomfortable

Well, as MacArthur said on numerous occassions he was ordered by the president to leave the Philippines.

According to Whitehall he should have disobeyed his orders from the President himself. As for Makin no one LEFT them. They were unable to paddle their raft out of the surf and got stuck. But then facts are not the strong suit of liars and hypocrites.
