Marine Raiders fought on Guadalcanal, Tulagi and Islands during WWII.

Raiders received 7 Medals of Honor, 136 Navy Crosses, 21 Distinguished Service Stars 330 Silver Stars.

Raiders were formed in February 1942 and modeled on the British Commandos.

President Franklin Roosevelt had a son who served in Raiders as well

480 BC This is the probable date of the beginning of the three day encounter at Thermopylae, in which Xerxes’ huge army was (temporarily) bottled up by a small force of Greeks, led by Leonidas and the famed Spartan 300. Their heroic sacrifice is encapsulated in Simonides’ lines:

Go tell the Spartan, passerby,
That here, obedient to their laws, we lie.

A Greek traitor, Ephialtes, knew about a path around Thermopylae, and showed the Persians how to outflank the Greeks: ephialtis is today the modern Greek word for “nightmare.”

Fighting to the end (Leonidas to his men: “Tonight we shall dine in Hades”), they slew over twenty thousand of the Persians. The time that Leonidas held up the Persians allowed the Greek fleet to wreak havoc on the Persian navy at Artemisium. The final battle of the Greco-Persian war was at Plataea in 479.

The raid was a failure, no intelligence was gained and the Japanese were not diverted from Guadalcanal. Not only that but Carlson left 12 of his men on the island to later be beheaded by the Japanese.

True to form the FDR administration turned failure into media victory by awarding a MOH to MacArthur who lost his entire army and Carlson who achieved nothing but looked damned good doing it.

Well, as MacArthur said on numerous occassions he was ordered by the president to leave the Philippines.

According to Whitehall he should have disobeyed his orders from the President himself. As for Makin no one LEFT them. They were unable to paddle their raft out of the surf and got stuck. But then facts are not the strong suit of liars and hypocrites.
