ATLANTA -- A recount in the Atlanta mayoral election reaffirmed that former state Sen. Kasim Reed defeated Councilwoman Mary Norwood, concluding one of the city's tightest political contests in decades.

The final margin separating the candidates was 714 votes out of more than 84,000 cast in the Dec. 1 balloting, according to election officials.

The recount was performed Wednesday at Ms. Norwood's request and added one vote to her total. "The recount results are final, and now it is time to accept it," she told reporters at her campaign headquarters.

That's a very close race considering that blacks usually vote for blacks and ~61% of the population of Atlanta is black.

according to the source i cited, the racial make-up is now 56% black to 36 % white.

still it was very close. votes seem to fall along the racial divide, which sucks.

As results came in on election night, a late surge of votes from predominantly white precincts helped her nearly erase Mr. Reed's lead, which he had run up in heavily black precincts.
