Atheists Assaulted for Objecting to Prayer in Hawaii State Senate (Video)

So, these people went in with the intent on interrupting the opening prayer. They did so in a highly disruptive fashion and were escorted out by security. They then started yelling at security that they were breaking the law. And they expected what exactly to happen? Oh yeah, they had the camera rolling because they knew they'd get a reaction.

Where did you get that from?

It seems likely to me that that was their intent. They were in the visitors gallery, with a camera, and started disrupting the prayer. Until/unless we're told they had some other reason to be there, it seems most likely that the reason they were there is to disrupt the prayer.

ONE religion has no place in government.

Why should anyone whos not christain HAVE to observe any one religions services in a building paid for by the people?

NOT EVERY AMERICAN IS A CHRISTIAN!

Us non Christains own this government too.

The secularist model conceived by the framers of the US Constitution was a tremendous advancement for the 18th century but now it's clearly showing its age.

The american society needs to stop treating a 200 year old political document as a Holy Book and clarify, once and for all, that the "free exercise" does not apply to state facilities.

I disagree with the implication that anyone is forced to observe anything.

The fact that anyone gets their nose out of joint over an opening prayer says more about them than anything else. It says they're intolerant assholes.

I would love to see Christians, Muslims and Jews calling themselves "intolerant assholes" after refusing to stand up during a santeria\voodoo pray.

The embarassement, the discomfort felt by atheists, agnostics and minorities during religious rites is never real until it is experienced first hand by the followers of the dominant religion.

What you seem to forget is that NO ONE is being forced to say the prayer, nor bow their heads ~ all they need to do is be quiet,

OR SHOW UP AFTER THE OPENING PRAYER,

if it's so abhorrent to them.

Exactly.

And if any members who are of a different faith request equal time for their own opening prayer they should get it.

I don't see how this is 'assault'.

First the members of the Senate obviously aren't objecting to the prayer, in fact accepting it, if there was an Atheist member then that member would not be forced to stand or even remain to listen to the said prayer.

Second they appear to be disrupting the prayer, on the basis it is a violation of the separation of church and state, while that might be true on some basis that is no reason to disrupt the standard senate procedure.

Third they could put forward the constitutional reasons why the said prayer is a violation of church by holding a protest outside, sending a letter to a local member of the senate, start a case at the supreme court and try to get a judge to declare it unconstitutional in that state or alternatively run for office and try to change the procedure.

But that is not going to happen so they just decide to make asses of themselves, distrupt the senate session and cry wolf. :cuckoo:

I'm not his lawyer, never said a word in support of his protest.

I'm just saying those Christians, Muslims and Jews I mentioned earlier would most definitely "get their nose out of joint over an opening (voodoo) prayer" which speaks volumes about the need to reform American secularism by making clear that the free exercise does not apply to state facilities.
