One person is in serious condition and another three suffered injuries when a bus belonging to tour company Cars Rouges hit the Alexandre III Bridge on Friday afternoon, local media reports.

There were around 20 people on the bus when the crash happened at around 1pm, including several on the open upper deck, it is reported.

It is unclear why Cars Rouges, which is an established tour operator in the French capital, tried to pass through the tunnel

The tunnel is limited to vehicles under 2.7m high, which is easily exceeded by the height of the bus.

Images from the scene show the bus, similar to open-topped vehicles which operate in London, in a tunnel with damage to its upper floor.

The tunnel is filled with emergency vehicles, while paramedics and other rescue workers stand off to one side.

Another image shows tourists still stuck on the upper decks, crouching down to avoid hitting their heads on the ceiling
