Why is it unreasonable to expect a federal employee to stay awake for an 8 hour shift?

It is the way the shifts are laid out.. back to back ...day/night.. It's just lousy management.

Umm I thought getting rid of unions was to fix that problem?

So the Atcs don't belong to a union?

sure sounds like a union to me

but Reagan fired them all or something?
Or was that another Reagan myth?

Firing people who refuse to work is not the same as getting rid of a union

Never happened when PATCO was in place.

They would not have allowed for one man to run the whole damned show.

Yeah, the old tried and true union approach would be good. They'd have 4 or 5 guys on duty overnights sleeping on duty.

Friend of mine was staying on the Island of Nantucket one summer in the 90s and he forged an aquaintance with one of the the Islands air traffic controllers.

He told me a story that the ATC told him about what happens when a certain family (whose name is well known as one of Americans richest) flies into Nantucket.

The day before they are slated to fly there, they fly in their own PERSONAL air traffic controllers (TWO).

They have apparently been doing this ever since Reagan broke the back of PATCO.

Do you think, perhaps, they know something that some of us here apparently do not?

They knew (or sense) that cutting down of air traffic control personnel was a terrible idea

Well they, unlike any of us here, can afford to be safe.

The rest of us?

Well, we just have to hope that the air traffic controllers aren't oerworked and are awake.
