Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce has warned Asian countries could see Australia as "decadent" if moves to legalise same-sex marriage are successful.

Mr Joyce was asked about comments last week by another frontbencher opposed to gay marriage, Eric Abetz, who is the Leader of the Government in the Senate.

Senator Abetz suggested that if Asian countries did not accept same-sex marriage then Australia should not either, pointing to the often-repeated phrase that for Australia this was the Asian century.

"Eric is right in saying where we live economically is south east Asia, that's where our cattle go," Mr Joyce told the ABC's Insiders program.

"When we go there, there are judgments whether you like it or not that are made about us.

"They see us as decadent."

'Gay marriage could damage our cattle exports'

An Australian minister warned that gay marriage could damage the country's cattle exports because it is seen as "decadent".

Agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce warned of the impact on trading partners in Asia of legalising gay marriage across Australia.

"Where we live economically is south east Asia, that's where our cattle go," Mr Joyce told the ABC network.

"When we go there, there are judgments whether you like it or not that are made about us. They see us as decadent.”

Barrie Cassidy, the host of the Insiders programme on which Mr Joyce was appearing, replied: "Would they see us embracing gay marriage as decadence?”

"I think that in some instances they would, yeah," Mr Joyce then answered.

And Australia cares what Asian countries think because...?

Hard to imagine Thailand, Vietnam, or the rest of the SE Asian countries thinking Australia's decadent. Or at least, more decadent than countries whose primary revenue sources are sex tourism.

Speaking of which, if they don't think a country with legalized prostitution (as Australia has) isn't decadent already, don't think SSM is gonna be a very weighty straw.

There are more trannies in SE Asia that Delta could ever fuck...Compared to the ones in the USA he's walked on several times...

New Zealand legalized civil unions in 2005, and then same-sex marriage in 2013.

There was no loss of trade after that: Dubai New Zealand to enhance economic ties - Trade and Export Middle East
H.E. Al Shirawi said: “Dubai-New Zealand non-oil trade increase by 38% last year to AED2.8 billion, rising from just over AED 2 billion in 2013. New Zealand is now Dubai’s 56th largest international trade partner and an important supplier for Dubai’s food and beverage, health, and infrastructure sectors.
So his claim is fanciful, and kind of desperate.
