It's hard not to feel a certain sympathy for Daniel McArthur, a young man standing up for what he believed in and what his church, the Reformed Presbyterians, had advised. What jars is his seeming lack of empathy for others. His statements were all about what he had been through, how he was dragged through the courts and how he believed he was right.

“The argument that the Bible says marriage must be between one man and one woman is, in any case, false. It advises loving your wife, but also provides rules for the treatment of multiple wives and slave girls. Anyway, in the 21st century, you can't shut down an argument by saying "it's in the Bible" - especially when you can't point to the precise passage.”

True.

And in the United States, a religious 'argument' is devoid of all legal merit, regardless the century.

Know what else is 'in the Bible?'

13 If thou shalt hear tell concerning one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to dwell there, saying:
14'Certain base fellows are gone out from the midst of thee, and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying: Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known';
15then shalt thou inquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in the midst of thee;
16thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.
- Devarim 13

If anyone in a city worships ANY but "God" you're to slay every resident, and burn the city to thr ground.

'Jesus' isn't "God" in this context coming from the Jewish text WAY before Jesus was even born. So by all rights, if we obey the Bible, we should lob a nuclear weapon at Vatican City being an emobodiment of something the Bible says should be destroyed completely.
