With the thousands I saved from not smoking, drinking to excess and using illegal drugs I was able to purchase an expensive racing bicycle and never looked back. Today at 72 I have a 45-year-old body from riding with people decades younger than I am.

If you want to cough up blood because your liver looks like a Sun-dried sponge, have at it. If you want to be financially destroyed by paying for quadruple heart bypass surgery I won’t stand in your way. A bit of an oversimplification. Currently, you are using medicare and, I assume, receiving social security. Both of which were considered socialistic if not outright communistic when created. Do you intend to give the money back?

I have a friend whose son has MS and is confined to a wheelchair. He did nothing to cause this but the question still remains, should we just let him die?

Another way of looking at itis that 80% of those who died were over 75. And life expectancy in france far exceeds that in the US. So France's healthcare system -- which costs less per capita than ours and results in better outcomes across the board, by every measure available -- produces more old people that can die in heat waves.

You mean our dysfunctional gov't or gov't in general? Trick question since the answer is the same, the gov't CAN handle health care and has played a major role for a very long time:

• sets standards for drugs and medical procedures (the days of snake oil are over)
• researches and funds private research of all kinds
• runs Medicare & Medicaid, two very popular programs
• runs the VA, a gov't run, single-payer system, popular with vets

Plenty of gov'ts around the world have various forms of gov't health care systems.
