Army chief says US ready to be in Iraq 10 years

WASHINGTON – The Pentagon is prepared to leave fighting forces in Iraq for as long as a decade despite an agreement between the United States and Iraq that would bring all American troops home by 2012, the top U.S. Army officer said Tuesday.

Gen. George Casey, the Army chief of staff, said the world remains dangerous and unpredictable, and the Pentagon must plan for extended U.S. combat and stability operations in two wars. "Global trends are pushing in the wrong direction," Casey said. "They fundamentally will change how the Army works."

obama promised to withdraw the troops, get us out of there....used iraq to seperate himself from mccain....

now, his iraq plans are no different than bush or mccain.

you sure about that? I remember when 10 democratic candidates were on stage. Only Kucinich and Gravel were able to swear the troops would be home by 2013.

It seems like you are only hearing what you want to hear. Either that or you are taking what the far left wants and projecting it onto Obama.

Either way what you posted is a contingency plan and it's perfectly normal and responsible of the military to have plans for possible scenarios.

No real news here this time.

i'm not sure what you getting at, but that is why i said obama now resembles mccain....mccain went after both obama and hillary for their promises to simply withdraw troops....obama's plan is much more like mccain's now that obama is president

see above

What I am getting at is I have never seen any reason to believe Obama would get us out of Iraq. Why? Because he couldn't promise it on that stage.

true, but he did not waste time distancing himself from mccain on iraq, despite that in reality, he is virtually identical to mccan on iraq. obama gave nuanced speeches that led many to believe him "different" when it came to iraq. all i am doing is pointing out the reality and how duped obama's followers are.

So what in hell was all the yellin' about when McCain answered that question about 100 years? That it would "be fine"? Didn't anyone else understand that?

Were you sleeping through the 20-month campaign AND the last 4 months?

WASHINGTON, Feb 2 (IPS) - CENTCOM commander Gen. David Petraeus, supported by Defence Secretary Robert Gates, tried to convince President Barack Obama that he had to back down from his campaign pledge to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months at an Oval Office meeting Jan. 21.

But Obama informed Gates, Petraeus and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen that he wasn't convinced and that he wanted Gates and the military leaders to come back quickly with a detailed 16-month plan, according to two sources who have talked with participants in the meeting.

Obama's decision to override Petraeus's recommendation has not ended the conflict between the president and senior military officers over troop withdrawal, however. There are indications that Petraeus and his allies in the military and the Pentagon, including Gen. Ray Odierno, now the top commander in Iraq, have already begun to try to pressure Obama to change his withdrawal policy.

A network of senior military officers is also reported to be preparing to support Petraeus and Odierno by mobilising public opinion against Obama's decision.

And you are using a contingency plan that would exist no matter who is POTUS to make your point?

i guess you see campaign promises as bullshit. the only thing considered should be acting while president. promises are nothing, and distancing yourself from your political opponent, even though not true, is ok because it is a campaign....do you not see the difference between what obama told people and how he is actually treating iraq?

he is full of shit, yes. I can't judge the people who voted for him. I voted for McCain.

Don't you?

The man has set forth a plan to get combat troops out by the end of next summer. Some would call that "ending the war" while others would maintain that he's "continuing the occupation."

He's not going to satisfy everyone and those who will attack him for the sake of attacking him will do just that.

Okay, let's be absolutely clear here.

Rhetoric is the art of using language as a means to persuade.

So.... Obama engaged in using RHETORIC in order to win an election <gasp> and everyone who voted for CHANGE is FOS. Is that about right?

No. Obama is full of shit. All the people who voted for change were duped imo.
