Are you prepared for an EMP attack?

Rummy was on the Daily Show a few days ago, or maybe a week ago, and one of the things he said was there's this hypothetical study done called Operation Dark Winter, and it found something to the effect that smallpox could be planted in three major cities across the country and 100 million people, I think, would die within the year--either from the disease directly or from the collapse of our over-burdened medical system.

How do you prepare for such an event? I guess the same way you prepare for getting into a fatal car wreck on the way to work. :dunno:

One person's reasonable precautions are another's paranoia. Just a matter of perspective I guess. A seatbelt and not driving like a banshee out of hell, reasonable. Outfitting your sedan to WRC safety standards and wearing a flame-retardant suit every time you get behind the wheel, a little much.

The difference with EMP though, is that it is a naturally occurring event, and we're long overdue for a CME with the power to destroy our grid.

The grid wasn't built the last time we had a large one (1859).

So it is coming, whether it is launched by an enemy or not. Our world has changed a LOT since the last major storm, and our dependence on the grid could prove fatal, naturally or through an attack from an enemy.

It matters little if few others are prepared.

Wake up.

Too many prepared is not good either.

Resources would be VERY limited in a VERY short period of time.

Anarchy would be the norm. Whoever could control or contain it would rule the region.

Every civilization in the history of the world only prospered when trade was introduced. Thinking you're going to rule anything because you have guns or canned peas is rather naive. You'll probably finish ahead of a lot of people but there will be no winners; just a different degree of losers if/when it occurs.

I'm talking about civilizations, organized communities. There will be LOADS of trade going on, between those communities as well. The loners will be eliminated very quickly. If you aren't part of a close, organized community, you're days are numbered. And it won't be a big number.

I have a tin foil hat at the ready

We need your kind too :)

Don't want that EMP fucking with my brain waves

Otherwise, I prepare for EMP like any other nuclear attack.....I don't

I didn't prepare for Y2K either

I actually worked on "averting" the Y2K "disaster" by adding 2 spaces to the year field in COBOL programs at a major bond company while I was a consultant.

Fun and heroic stuff..I tells ya.

And what "exactly" do we need in case of an EMP attack? In NYC the power was knocked off for several days a few years back. We managed fine.

Ridiculous.

If you live in NYC, don't worry about.

You're all doomed.

But seriously, think of everything you'd need if electricity were gone forever, and there were no stores for 2-3 years to go buy anything, including food.

The last place I want to be is a large city. Especially New York, DC, or Chicago. Those places will be at war among themselves within hours.

I watched my favorite Kevin Kostner movie last night. ;)

Do the right thing.... Give it back...

We all appreciate your efforts in allowing us to face the new millenium

Ridiculous.

What is ridiculous?

The notion that a sudden lose of Electricity would cause the collapse of civilization. What? In that event do everybody also suddenly forget how to make things?

I've lived through multiple power outages and with one exception, everyone managed fine.

Humans are remarkably adaptable, which is why we are the dominant species on the planet.

There was a very good novel on the subject a couple of years back. Based on the Premise that a few Atmospheric Nuclear detonations crippled the Nation, nothing built with any computer technology would function, long term, and Society fell apart. Great Novel. Real Life, we adapt to what we need to. Sallow will have plenty of rats to roast, I will have plenty of squirrels.

I don't think you understand EMP.

This isn't a "power outage," where you wait around for the power company to get the power back up. Their trucks won't be running, and they'll have no way to contact the employees.

EVERYTHING electronic is immediately fried. Done. And the parts that would repair those things.....guess what.....they're fried too.

So there is no power.

There is no radio.

Your car doesn't work (unless it is an OLD one with NO electronics).

Airplanes don't fly, in fact, those in the air immediately fall out of the sky.

Cellphones and telephones are out immediately, along with the Internet. TV, and radio.

EVERYTHING that is electronic ceases to function all at once. Including all the spare parts we have laying around to repair those things that have broken.

"One Second After"

They're making a movie of it. I think it is a pretty realistic view, and it really makes you stop and think "what will we do when we get there?"

And the world is going to go berserk when they realize what EMP is, how close we are too it, and what the world will likely be like after an EMP attack or CME.

We know it is coming, we just don't know where from.

I understand exactly what it is..and I don't think it would cause the collapse of civilization. Like I pointed out..Humans are remarkably adaptable. An EMP event would suck..no doubt, but from what I've seen..and historically..people basically work through the crap. One of the worst disasters in NYC was 9/11 and it brought people together. They cleaned up the site is several weeks. And the building is taking so long because the whole freakin country thinks they should have a say in it.

The last place I want to be is a large city. Especially New York, DC, or Chicago. Those places will be at war among themselves within hours.

Personally, I have been stockpiling guns and ammunition so that I can participate in the widespread looting and pillaging of my neighbors cache of food and water.

I have cased out the local liquor store and have my eyes on several kegs of beer which I intend to liberate

I figure with the power grid down, there will be no internet access. So I have been stocking porn magazines so that I can fill the expected void.

Is there anything else I need to do to prepare?

Is there anything else I need to do to prepare?

Spirulina, Sprouts, will both go a long way, long shelf life. Solar Distiller, for water purification.

Once our military responds immediately to any attack, we will get it together and start rebuilding. Minor setback. Of course there will be some fatalities, but nothing like what people are talking about....

Just be first, and be fast!

An old Ford (late 70s or earlier) would be nice as well....but will draw attention as it may be the only running vehicle in the city.

Be speedy, my brother!
