Americans face bullying long after they have left the playground with a startling 35% of adults either been bullied or currently experiencing bullying at work, according to the Workplace Bullying Institute.

Workplace bullying is defined by the WBI as "repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one of more persons by one or more perpetrators," and includes verbal abuse, offensive conduct and behaviors (including nonverbal) that are threatening, humiliating or intimidating and work interference or sabotage, which prevents work from getting done.

These actions have serious side effects for victims, according to the WBI, including heart disease and post-traumatic stress disorder. Now lobbyists are increasing their calls for state lawmakers to pass anti-bullying in the workplace legislation.

When I was 24, I worked for a supervisor that sexually harassed me on business trips. I'm not talking about mild flirting or even vulgar talk (I have since worked with cops for a living, I'm super tolerant). He routinely pressured me to come to his hotel room so he could give a massage. He'd slept with the last woman who had my job, and felt entitled. He was the one who signed my performance evaluations. I was a kid right out of college, and it was scary. I was living paycheck to paycheck, and couldn't afford to lose my job. Beyond that, I loved the work I did, but didn't want to have sex with him. I met my ex during that period, and I got pregnant and we ended up getting married. My supervisor went around the company telling everyone that I was pregnant outside of wedlock (first) and then, after the wedding, telling everyone that I was going to quit my job and be a SAH mom. He wanted to push me into leaving so that he could get someone else into the position who would be more sexually compliant.

I finally ended up standing up to him and yelling at him in his face that I'd sue his fat ass if he didn't knock it off. But, in those days, an EEOC complaint would follow you professionally for years (small world in my field, and you were often suspected of initiating it for personal gain).

I was really relieved when I finally got a different job and didn't have to put up with it anymore. I used to laugh at stuff like this, but in this economy and in at-will states, people will put up with a lot of crap to keep their jobs. I am all about working hard and taking care of business, but people shouldn't have to put up with abuse to keep their job. And, there isn't a lot of recourse when you're in one of those situations, except to leave.

Why exactly do we put the onus on the person who is being abused to uproot their entire life because another grownup can't act like a civilized human being on the job?

God help the private sector if the feds get involved and workers are allowed to bring federal lawsuits against their employers because someone gave them the finger. That's what it is about you know. Socialists would bring the entire system to a halt with federal lawsuits over hurt feelings and multi billion dollar compensation awards to slick lawyers.

I realize there is a lot of shit that comes around and goes around. But no, I am NOT being bullied at work. I am able to go in and take my place in the workplace in such a way that no one can or will try to push me out of it. I taught my students to do that. I taught my children to do that. On the rare occasion that something runs out of the bushes and bites me, I deal with it then and there!!!! That is why the occasions are rare.

I worked for a real dickhead when I got out of college. As soon as I found a better job, I quit. Voila! No more bullying.

Essentially they are trying to criminalize douchbaggery. Hmmm. Maybe I should rethink my position on this. Lol

There are laws on the books about harassment and even special (hate crime) laws covering sissies who can't defend themselves. There are state and local laws that cover misdemeanor and felony assault crimes. Once we bring the federal court into the workplace regarding hurt feelings we will be in one hell of a mess. A federal agency assigned to investigate bully complaints and full time federal bully expert on duty in every workplace. A backlog of law suits that would put small and medium companies out of business and an army of sleazy lawyers combing the companies for the slightest case that would net them an easy dollar.

Yet lawyers can do nothing without "you all" who come to them, asking to sue. They also find great help when "you all" get picked for the jury, and hand over outrageous sums of money.

"You all" are great at spouting how ridiculous this or that law, lawsuit, etc. is. But none of this happens without "you all". In fact, "you all" drive it.

It's kind of like "you all" scream for blood when a lady is accused of killing her 2-year-old. Then "you all" find her not guilty. "You all" uniformly tell us how crazy the coffee lawsuit is. But "you all" routinely hand over money in similar suits.

The law is like democracy. Everyone hates Congress. But YOUR congressman is OK. Everyone's lawsuit is frivolous. Except YOURS. We should cut welfare. But not YOUR welfare.

Yawn.

I had a boss so bad once, I'm sure the owner hired me. I had to threaten the GM with physical violence during the interview if he ever treated me with such disrespect again.

He was fired a few months later
