Now he has one year as president, but you can't count that.
He only had 1-1.5 years as a U.S. senator, the rest of it he spent campaigning.

Why?

Well in part because he was probably the smartest man in the room and they knew that all too well, and in part because he was likely the most knowedgeable about how the Europeans (that mattered) thought of us, too.

His mastery of the public relations between the Continental Congress and the peers of the realm of France was brilliant.

Had it not been for him we'd likely have not won that war.
