Verdict” True

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report on job openings and labor turnover said that there were 6.6 million open jobs in May, the most recent month for which that data is available. The bureau’s monthly jobs report found that there were 6.1 million unemployed people the same month.

And there are a whole lot of people who are not qualified, for a variety of reasons, to fill those jobs.

To add a little more context, the unemployment level is based employment activity for the week that contains the 12th and job search for the 4 weeks ending with that reference week.
So for the week of May 6-12, there were an estimated 5,756,000 people who did not work or have a job that week who wanted a job, could have started a job that week if offered one, and tried to get a job between April 15th and May 12th.

On 31 May, there were an estimated 6,671,000 jobs advertised and actually available; 6,071,000 in the private sector, 600,000 government (not including the military, CIA, DIA, NGA, or NSA).

Note: I gave the not seasonally adjusted numbers because I believe that to be a more accurate comparison when looking at a single month. Usually the data are seasonally adjusted and that is better for month-month comparisons.
