Wednesday 26th October, 2016 - Russia declassified its latest missile RS-28 Sarmat aka Satan II, a gigantic thermonuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), marking the country’s preparation to face the western blocks as conflict linked to Syria mounts.

Wednesday 26th October, 2016 - Russia declassified its latest missile RS-28 Sarmat aka Satan II, a gigantic thermonuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), marking the country’s preparation to face the western blocks as conflict linked to Syria mounts.
The Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau (MRDB) unveiled the image of the new missile that would be available for service by end of 2018. The MRDB Missile’s Chief Designers, V Degtar and Y Kaverin in a statement said, “In accordance with the Decree of the Russian Government ‘On the State Defense Order for 2010 and the planning period 2012-2013,’ the Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau was instructed to start design and development works on the Sarmat. In June 2011, the Bureau and the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a state contract for the Sarmat’s development. The prospective strategic missile system is being developed in order to assuredly and effectively fulfill objectives of nuclear deterrent by Russia’s strategic forces.”
Russia’s newest super heavy missile is liquid propelled and can carry up to 16 warheads which can erase a landmass as big as Texas or France. It also plans to replace all Soviet era RS-36M ICBMs by 2022. Russian media reports suggest that the missile’s first stage engine PDU-99 was tested in August, while a hypersonic warhead was also tested in April. Another reason to worry about Russia’s new toy is that it is built with stealth technology, which means existing radars will not be able to detect it. With the new missile, Russia will now be able to attack major European cities as well as America’s east and west coasts as it is boosted by a range of 10,000 km (6213 miles).
As preparations were ongoing for Sarmat, Colonel-General Sergei Karakayev, the Commander of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces in May said,“The development of the Sarmat silo-based missile system with a heavy missile is nearing completion. The performance of the stationary grouping of the heavy ICBMs (Voyevoda or Sarmat class) will four times surpass that of the stationary grouping of the light-class ICBMs (Topol-M, Yars) by all the RVSN [Strategic Missile Forces] grouping tactical effectiveness parameters.”
It has been reported that Russia has also been working on a new hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), the YU-71, shrouded as the secret Project 4202, a warhead supposedly capable of penetrating any missile defense shield that can be mounted on the SR-28. With U.S. alleging Russia of ‘hacking into U.S.-based companies’ and ‘trying to influence the presidential election’, diplomatic relations between the two countries have soured over the last decade. While Russia might have issued a warning to U.S. with Satan II, U.S. has also been preparing missile launch bases close to Russia, prompting a prospect of World War III.
