Are Old People Killing the GOP?

I wonder how those receiving SS and Medicare feel about efforts by the GOP to 'reform' both by handing them off to Wall Street. A good strategy now for the D's would seem to counter the emotional hysteria which is all the R's have with the cold hard facts of what would have happened to their SS checks if the Bush effort to 'reform' social security had passed?
All their 'security' into the hands of Bernie Madoff or the hedge funds boys, that would have been the last nail in the coffin of the once GOP.

Oh yeah, because the Democrats didn't have a hand in Bankrupting SS.

but remember folks, it's the Democrat-Progressive party who CARES MORE.

The facts is, not only Obama put our grandchildren in debt to China, but he turned around and signed legislation ot jack our taxes not for the purpose of repaying THAT loan, but to support a socialist program already doomed to failure.

The fact is, the loony toon faction of the GOP (the base) is dying, and the GOP will follow suit because of dwindling numbers.

Treasury bonds are only good if the government has money...which they don't. They'll have to borrow it from someone to cash in those bonds.

True but that is the treasury's problem. SS is not yet bankrupt and will not be for several years yet.

Younger voters who realize how they were duped are moving right. Many who call themselves Libertarians or Indies will most likely vote R in the future. My only concern with the tea party is they may promote 3rd party candidates which will ultimately hurt their cause. It sounds good; but we aint there yet.

I don't think old people are killing the GOP, but I do think its death will be one of attrition; when they die, the GOP will go with them.

I think Progressive policies are shrinking the ranks of Democrat voters faster then Preparation H.

But here's what I see is the difference.


Dems ran on these policies. The GOP runs on one set of policies and then governs on another. The GOP screwed it up so badly under Dubya, that people who wouldn't normally vote Dem did. Now, if they are hanging their hats on senior citizens, they're going to be in for a shock. Yes, senior citizens are a reliable voting block, but they get onery as hell when they figure out they've been screwed. And the GOP screwed em on the healthcare debate.

Looks like the former Grand Old Party has become just the Old Party

Support from older voters could be crucial in this year's mid-term elections. But will the aging of the party make it harder for Republicans to win down the road?

Republicans have sold out at their peril: "Elderly voters...have come running back to the GOP in the last year," says Daniel Larison in American Conservative, because the Republicans have painted health reform as a threat to Medicare. Unfortunately, becoming the "defenders" of a gigantic entitlement program for the elderly -- "at the expense of our future" -- is not the way to endear the GOP to tomorrow's voters.

If you're going to have a solid voting block, this is the one to have: "You can win an awful lot of elections just by mobilizing the over-65 constituency," says Ross Douthat in The New York Times. They vote, "and there are more of them every day." But the GOP can't just abandon its commitment to limited government. The trick will be figuring out how to keep the elderly happy and rein in Medicare spending -- an economic necessity -- at the same time.
