The midterms are over. But the 5,600 American troops sent to the southern border with Mexico are "still going through the motions of an elaborate mission that appeared to be set into action by a commander in chief determined to get his supporters to the polls," the New York Times reports.

What's happening: Troops at the border are sleeping in tents that house 20 soldiers and have no electricity or air conditioning, with some suffering heat exhaustion within days of starting the mission. There's no mess hall — only pre-made "Ready-to-Eat" meals — and the only phone chargers available are attached to "a few generators that power spotlights around the living area." Department of Defense officials worry that if the number of troops increases to 15,000, the cost could be as high as $200 million."

I don't know where they're getting that information but it's pure bovine excrement.

Sure, the troops may be eating MREs but I can guarantee you that quartermaster personnel are setting up all of the things needed to keep troops in the field. There will be mess halls and medical facilities. It's a matter of time and the troops expected that when they signed up.

With the number of troops there that can only do support and logistics, there is no way in hell that they should not have adequate hot meals and be rested. It the US Army and Marines. They have more people there than they could ever need short of the Mexican Military launching a full scaled invasion. The Army and Marines have field kitchens that are some of the best in the world. It may not be Filet Mignon but it's hot, healthy and filling. And I could sleep just fine on a cot in a nice dry tent. Hell, at one time, I could sleep on a 2by4 and the cot would be considered a luxury. The ONLY reason that two of your "Whatifs" were to happen there is that someone is not doing their job in logistics. And chances are, it's not funded well enough for them to do their jobs. And guess who should shoulder that blame? The guy that ordered them there.
