Half of U.S. pays no federal income tax
Credits for low- and middle-income families exempt many

The result is a tax system that exempts almost half the country from paying for programs that benefit everyone, including national defense, public safety, infrastructure and education. It is a system in which the top 10 percent of earners — households making an average of $366,400 in 2006 — paid about 73 percent of the income taxes collected by the federal government.

Yes sad but very true. Only 5% of this population makes over 250K per year and less than 1% of the population makes over 300K per year.

But Obama and liberals want to hammer them again with higher taxes---:lol::lol:

It really doesn't make any sense--does it? Of course, not unless you're a socialist and believe in wealth redistribution--then it would make sense to you.

The article adds:

The bottom 40 percent, on average, make a profit from the federal income tax, meaning they get more money in tax credits than they would otherwise owe in taxes. For those people, the government sends them a payment.

"We have 50 percent of people who are getting something for nothing," said Curtis Dubay, senior tax policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation.

Wow!

Wow!

Yeah--it's called the "earned income tax CREDIT"--- meaning if you earned some income during the year, and didn't have any federal tax liability--this tax credit gives you back a federal government refund check--even if you didn't pay a penny in federal income tax during the year.

I imagine with the economy in shambles--millions will be qualifying under this tax code this year.

So what your saying is they pay nothing for infrastructure yet get to take advantage of such? They also “get paid” ( for the lack of a better word) as well by the top ten percent of earners? AND that same 10 percent of earners making over 300, 000 a year will now have to now have to pay for even more to pay for their health care too?

Half of folks don't pay any income tax? That is outrageous! When it was first implemented, more than 99% of the population didn't pay any income tax.

Yeah--but remember--you're really not talking about 10% of the population--you're stating the top 10% of wage earners--which is only a reflection of about 5% of the entire population who has been made responsible by federal tax structure of taking care of the other 95% of the population.

Help me pick my chin up off the floor-- I think it got stuck when my jaw just dropped.

Come now, members here have been stating this fact for many months. It has been well known here since the time I started on this board. This is just more official.

Now, let's get back to crucifying Bush because he cut the taxes on those greedy rich bastards, never mind that he didn't cut taxes for the poor BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T PAY ANY TAXES TO CUT.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury.
From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over lousy fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.

The average of the world’s great civilizations before they decline has been 200 years.
These nations have progressed in this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to Complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependency; from dependency back again to bondage."

- Alexander Fraser Tytler*
(*quotation most often attributed to Tytler, although there is some doubt as to the authorship)

It seems to me that the lack of taxation on the bottom 50% really has become a threat to the future of our country. We have an existential threat to our nation created by DEBT.
And unless we have Americans getting some skin into the game... I don't see any way we're going to permanently reign in government spending.

We're at the tipping point, where the bottom 50% have no incentive to require responsible budgeting from the federal government. And the votes reflected as much in the last election cycle, which installed a president and a Congress who doubled down on the spending, creating yet another entitlement on top of the ones which were ALREADY crushing us.

I'm not one of those top 5%, but by God I'm not a mugger either. I have to have faith in my fellow citizens who are just as likely to make the honorable choice, particularly once the danger has been pointed out to them. As we enter this next election cycle, I'm sure the lure of "free" money will by strong in many of our citizens. But not all of that bottom 50% will be willing to trade Liberty for CA$H. I think there were a whole lot of voters who just weren't paying attention and didn't recognize the danger. Our job as conservatives is to wake them up.

It's time to scrap this "progressive" tax system. And while I think it's unlikely that we can repeal the 16th, a flat tax would be the next best step. That way, if Congress wants to spend money and needs to raise taxes in order to do it... they'll have to justify it to ALL of their constituents and not just a few. It's time to END the Robin Hood economics that kills our wages and destroys our productivity, innovation, and will.

This is classic redistribution of wealth.
Take from those who have, give to those who have not. In the end, the only people who have anything are corrupt government officials.

I'm in that half!

Rich, and loving it! They can't tax money they have already taxed.... And I have plenty of that. But my actual annual income is so low, they pay ME!

Shocking isn't it?

Apparently our government understands that it cannot squeeze blood out of a stone.

Of course the solution to this problem is to see to it that the bottom half of the working class get paid enough money that they DO have to pay taxes.

But that takes a vibrant economy where workers actually make a living wage doesn't it?

So basically what we find here is that the very people who are fortunate enough to make enough money that they pay taxes are bitching that too many of the working class that they employ don't make enough money to pay taxes.

Now, whose fault is that?

The working class who don't pay taxes?

Or the management class who does?

You'll excuse me, perhaps, if I'm less than sympathetic to the whining of that class of taxpayers.

The government does not exist to dictate what you should get paid as a result of your efforts, experience, training, etc.... that is YOUR personal responsibility

And what government should be doing is treating everyone equally... not playing Robin Hood

No, you tax high incomes because you want to prevent them from accumulating wealth, and take their money and give it to losers.

At least be honest.
