WASHINGTON (AP) — Boastful on the occasion of Memorial Day, President Donald Trump and his Veterans Affairs secretary are claiming full credit for health care improvements that were underway before they took office.

Trump said he passed a private-sector health care program, Veterans Choice, after failed attempts by past presidents for the last "45 years." That's not true. The Choice program, which allows veterans to see doctors outside the government-run VA system at taxpayer expense, was first passed in 2014 under President Barack Obama.

Trump's VA secretary, Robert Wilkie, also is distorting the facts. Faulting previous "bad leadership" at VA, Wilkie suggested it was his own efforts that improved waiting times at VA medical centers and brought new offerings of same-day mental health service. The problem: The study cited by Wilkie on wait times covers the period from 2014 to 2017, before Wilkie took the helm as VA secretary. Same-day mental health services at VA were started during the Obama administration under Wilkie's predecessor, David Shulkin.

Faking a disability so somebody else had to go to war in his place, attacking Gold star families, raising taxes on Gold Star families, insulting decorated veterans, and now this.

I'll bet if he shits on graves at Arlington, the Trump asshole lickers here would go eat it.

Trump has created a fantastic health-care system for our vets. The VA was abysmal under Obama, the non-natural born Citizen usurper. The vet's at our local Amvets post are proud of the way Trump is making changes to the VÀ healthcare system.

At least they won't have to worry about trump shitting on graves when it's raining though.
I wonder if times really get bad with the economy what would republicans do? There was a time they even fired on the vets demanding their bonus from WW1. They usually only give money to billionaires and large corporations. The peons are expendable to them.

The veterans were desperate. Gen. MacArthur ordered US troops to attack them.

You know, I shake my head every time Trump claims credit for the Veteran's Choice Program, because I've got a card in my wallet that says it was started before Trump thought about taking office (I'm a retired veteran and have both a VA card as well as a Veterans Choice card, to be used if it takes too long to get an appointment or if I have to travel over 50 miles to reach a VA), as the program was started by Obama after the Phoenix VA fiasco.

Did Obama’s Bill Fix Veterans’ Health Care? Still Waiting.

When President Obama signed a sweeping $15 billion bill to end delays at Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals two years ago, lawmakers standing with him applauded the legislation as a bold response that would finally break the logjam.

It has not quite worked out that way.

Although veterans say they have seen improvement under the bill, it has often fallen short of expectations. Nowhere is the shortfall more clear than in the wait for appointments: Veterans are waiting longer to see doctors than they were two years ago, and more are languishing with extreme waiting times.

According to the agency’s most recent data, 526,000 veterans are waiting more than a month for care. And about 88,000 of them are waiting more than three months

That's not the way it worked out for me. I had to make an appointment for a yearly physical, and when the earliest time they could fit me in was 35 days later, they asked me if that date was okay, or did I want to use my Veteran's Choice card and see a civilian doctor in the area, because it was over the 30 day maximum and I qualified. I told them no, it was okay, because it was a routine physical, as well as the fact that I am still in pretty good shape. Two days later, I got a letter from the VA telling me again that I could use my Veteran's Choice card to get a physical quicker, and to call if I wanted to do so. I called and told them that the appointment time was fine, and not to worry. And, that happened while Obama was still in office.

An unsourced newspaper article from 2016?

My source is unassailable from an AP sourced article submitted to US News.

Trump did expand eligibility for the program. Now, starting June 6, veterans are to have that option for a private doctor if their VA wait is only 20 days (28 for specialty care) or their drive is only 30 minutes.

Still, VA's top health official, Dr. Richard Stone, described the new program's start to "almost be a non-event" in testimony to Congress. That's in part because wait times in the private sector are typically longer than at VA. In 2018, 34 percent of all VA appointments were with outside physicians, down from 36 percent in 2017.

Also key to the Choice program's success is an overhaul of VA's electronic medical records to allow seamless sharing of them with private physicians, a process expected to take up to 10 years. Wilkie has said full implementation of the expanded Choice program is "years" away.

Trump has never done anything worthwhile in his whole worthless ass life. Everything he has is inherited, and unworked for.

How does that shit pile taste?
