Anyone ever been to Mexico?

Last time I was in Mexico City there were guards with automatic rifles in front of all the banks and nice hotels.
Not a real comforting feeling.

And this was in the pink zone in the city.

Guards armed with rifles doesn't make you feel safe?

Guns make uscitizen scared!

Nope but the fools holding them can.

I have killed and been shot. Neither is much fun.

I've been to Acapulco.

My advice would be to stay at the resort. There's not a whole lot to do in town unless you like beggars and thieves.

yeah, definitely stay away from the filthy locals. they are most likely not real merkans. they would not understand a word you say anyway. but you could try to repeat what they did not understand in a very loud voice and very slow. maybe los morones will get it then.

stay in a luxury hotel all the time, just use the pool, the ocean might contain jellyfish and/or salt. limit your exposure to the locals to the cleaning lady and the boys bringing you cocktails. but not too much attention, they all have STDs. the boys and the cleaning ladies.

sorry, dis. i cannot give you real advice, but some posts in this thread inspired me.

wtg elder, never miss a chance to bash your country or your fellow Americans. Proud of ya

The poverty in Mexico is surreal. I simply couldn't enjoy myself surrounded by it. I'm far too shallow and self centered to allow guilt to sour my vacationing.

My advice: Have a great time!

Don't carry a lot of cash if you go off the resort and you should be fine. Most tourist areas are relatively safe and though the poverty is depressing you are helping their economy.

You'll have a phenomenal vacation.

I went to a hotel/resort about a decade ago in Cancun the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach. It was truely paradise.

My wife and I went a little longer than a month ago. We loved the mexicans. They are hard workers.

My wife had a problem. 24 hours into our trip, walking to the beach, she slipped. My wife broker her ankle in three places, and shattered part of the bone.

She had to have surgery in Cancun. I paid about $10,000 for the hospital bill.

The day before Thanksgiving she saw a foot and ankle specialist in the US. Thanksgiving day she had surgery to correct what the mexican surgeon fucked up.

I loved the hotel, I loved Cancun, I loved the mexicans there.

I suggest get travelers insurance. That would have paid my hospital bill.

Also, drink bottled water. I am sure you will have an excellent time.

It is American, not merkans, and people were advised to stay in a resort because of the drug wars,, not because of the "dirty locals" the rest of your remarks are just foolish and xenophobic.

I don't waste my money on "cheap", so there, I should be fine..

But I did hear they'll bombard you in market places trying to get you to buy anything from jewelry to blankets.. Is it really that bad, or do they understand no?

It is the same way in Egypt and Turkey, they do follow you hawking their wares. It is bad because I think there are a lot of poor people. Mexico is pretty much a failed government. From what I am reading it is in fact dangerous to leave the resort areas. Check with the state department travel advisories. It is also true not to wear flashy expensive jewelry, no tennis shoes and blue jeans.

THREATS TO SAFETY AND SECURITY: Violence by criminal elements affects many parts of the country, including urban and rural areas. Visitors to the U.S.-Mexico border region, including cities such as Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, Nogales, and Matamoros should remain alert and be aware of their surroundings at all times. In its efforts to combat violence, the Government of Mexico has deployed military troops to various parts of the country. Military checkpoints increased in border areas in early 2008. U.S. citizens are advised to cooperate with official checkpoints when traveling on Mexican highways. Sporadic outbursts of politically motivated violence occur from time to time in certain areas of the country, particularly in the southern states of Chiapas, Guerrero and Oaxaca.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs’ website. Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts, as well as the current Worldwide Caution, can also be found at that site.

Up-to-date information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
The Department of State urges American citizens to take responsibility for their own personal security while traveling overseas. For general information about appropriate measures travelers can take to protect themselves in an overseas environment, see the Department of State’s information on A Safe Trip Abroad.

Demonstrations: The Mexican Constitution prohibits political activities by foreigners; such actions may result in detention and/or deportation. Travelers should avoid political demonstrations and other activities that might be deemed political by the Mexican authorities. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are urged to avoid areas of demonstrations, and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of any protests.
