We have and along with it we were informed that because of the new Obamcare bill we will see an increase in our policy rates jump anywhere from 16% to 18%. Not only will our monthly premiums sky rocket but our co pay will jump from $35 per visit to $50.

So the lies from the democrats were just that, BIG OLE STINKING PILE OF SHIT LIES.

Health care costs rose about 12% in the past year. I think you guys are listening to bullshit. Too few Obamacare provisions have gone into effect to account for any significant increase in rates. Insurance companies do make rates based upon expected experience in the coming year, but those predictions must be actuarially sound. No insurance regulator would bless an 18% increase across the board for any group merely because some members might be adding a college student to their policies.

Insurers are lying, guys. Use your noodles...that ain't so far-fetched, is it?

It happened. Just cuz you didn't read it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

The Administration inserted a threat in the bill to any insurance company that dared to raise rates to pay for the new regulations. I read the Department of Health and Human Services own regulations that stated as much.

There was a 39% increase on some people's premiums but the administration is telling them to provide detailed justification for this. My question is whether insurance companies are saying it is because of healthcare reform. If so, I'd like to see proof of that and not just some Repub talking point on this message board.

It's really getting tiring listening to these asinine memes.

This Obamacare crap is going to cost all of us. Dearly. And frankly I don't want government that involved in my private life. I have a right to control and have a say-so where my health care is concerned. I have good medical coverage now at a reasonable cost, but all that is going away unless this albatross of idiocy is shot down - and I pray that it will be shot down deader than hell.

mudwhistle, insurance company rates are set by the states, not the federal government. There may well be new HHS regulations on-point, but they likely apply in a manner not readily apparent, or to policies which have some federal regulation (some COBRA coverage does, etc.). I do not doubt your story, but there are many other reasons your rates may be going up.

The group which includes you may have had unusually bad experience in the past year.

The area of the country you are in may have experienced more than 12% inflation in health care costs.

You may have a crappy/corrupt state insurance regulator.

The state where you live may allow a certain degree of backloading. This is an insurance industry practice in which an initial polcy form year is rated lower than it should be to draw in customers, and subsequent years see members segregated into groups of healthy and sick, with sick people either dropped or increased far beyond what they should be (I personally think backloading is or should be illegal).

Most states have an Insurance Consumer Advocate. All have a Consumer Complaint Department of one sort or another. To find yours, look here:

National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)

You have not been given a straight answer as to why your rates rose so steeply, and I'd encourage you to look into it further.

I haven't received my yearly statement so I wouldn't know. Most of the time my rates go up without comment from the provider.

I was mainly commenting on threats contained in the Health and Human Services online site. It seems they feel they can exert control over and above the states.

Health insurance is different from any other line, and I don't doubt HHS has far more influence. But the way you are reading the regulations, insurers would have to absorb the costs of claims without adding them to their experience for rating purposes. I won't say that such a thing is impossible, but t'aint likely.

In any event, new HHS regulations against rate increases don't explain your rate increase. You should at least demand an explanation -- in writing.

What kind of plan do you have? You say "we" so I assume it's a family plan. Through an employer or bought in the individual market? And what state are you in?

I have not read the 2,500 page Obamacare law, but unless we have had a revolutionary change in insurance regulation, insurers should not be submitting rate plans to HHS for approval. The power to bless a rate still resides with the state insurance regulators.

I can easily imagine HHS is spot-checking though...and 39% is preposterous.

I hope you don't expect any answers to your questions. Some just come here to poop in the sandbox..

So the Democrats answer to this is, Obamacare fixed it. That ought to be pretty easy to prove in the next four months. See you around.

My insurance premium was cut in half and my deductible dropped from $1000 to $500.

My co-pay is now ZERO.
