INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Creationism could be taught alongside the theory of evolution in Indiana schools under a bill passed by the state Senate.

The Indianapolis Star reports if the bill becomes law, the debate over teaching creationism could lead to a lengthy legal battle.

The bill, passed Tuesday by the Senate 28-22, would still need to be approved by the House and signed by Gov. Mitch Daniels before becoming law.

"I believe in creation and I believe it deserves to be taught in our public schools," said Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn, the bill's author.

A Republican member of the Indiana General Assembly withdrew his bill to create a pilot program for drug testing welfare applicants Friday after one of his Democratic colleagues amended the measure to require drug testing for lawmakers.

Not only did Indiana pass the "magical creation" thing, but when Republicans tried to pass a "drug test the unemployed", Democrats added an amendment that anyone receiving "state money" has to be drug tested, including, get this, Republicans in the Senate.

Oops, they didn't like that.

You gotta love these Republicans. Their meanness and ignorance right out there for everyone to see.

What is funny to me is all these Republicans who swear the Republican Party doesn't hate science. Yet they are still trying to push "magical creation" How do they explain that?

There was a time when genuine liberalism welcomed a diversity of opinion in education. The new liberalism, which could be compared to fascism, wants to shut down argument and eliminate the reasonable exchange of attitude and ideas. Indiana ain't your enemy lefties, lighten up. The state merely offers the chance for teachers to mention God without being threatened with arrest.

This is either an example of conservative ignorance – as the Supreme Court has ruled the teaching of ‘creationism’ un-Constitutional, see: Edwards v. Aguillard – or they know very well it’s un-Constitutional and just want a drawn-out court battle for political reasons, to energize the fundamentalist base and try to make democrats look ‘anti-god,’ or some such idiocy.

Nonsense,

The issue isn’t ‘diversity of opinion,’ but yet another tedious rightwing effort to foist religion on public schools and score political points, in violation of the Constitution.

As the Court noted in Aguillard:

“It is equally clear that requiring schools to teach creation science with evolution does not advance academic freedom.”

The Court also stated that ‘creation science’ has little to do with science, and everything to do with religion:

“The legislative history therefore reveals that the term "creation science," as contemplated by the legislature that adopted this Act, embodies the religious belief that a supernatural creator was responsible for the creation of humankind. [T]he purpose of the Creationism Act was to restructure the science curriculum to conform with a particular religious viewpoint.”

Seems to be plenty of money to give tax cuts to millionaires. But not enough for education. Besides, education is bad and teachers are bad people.

I personally think that until our graduates are literate and able to do basic math that theories such as evolution and creation both need to be left out of the curriculum.

Indiana has a bevy of insurance agents and real estate salesmen that excel at shaking hands.

Once elected they become experts on educational matters.

They basically follow the party line to keep that party money rolling in before re-election time. Frauds....
