Back in the days of the Civil War, the Republican party including Abraham Lincoln opposed slavery. The Southern Democrats wanted to keep slavery.

Fast forward to the 1960’s during the Civil Rights movement. The Southern Democrats opposed civil rights for blacks and left the party — to become Republicans — in protest at the passage of the Civil Rights act. Republicans including Nixon developed what they called the Southern Strategy to bring pissed off racist southerners into the Republican party, where they remain today.

In summary, the racist Southerners used to be Democrats. They changed parties due to Civil Rights passage from the 1960’s forward. Today the southern racists are all Republican and Trump supporters, the most openly racist President in my lifetime.

Nixon's supposed "Southern Strategy" is a myth.

In 1972, Nixon won every state in the country except Massachusetts. He had a North, South, East, and West strategy.

In 1968, Nixon lost the former segregationist states. The Democrat George Wallace formed his own party and ran as an independent. George Wallace won Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Nixon won Florida, the Midwest, California, and basically everything else except Minnesota, Texas, and the liberal Northeast. Nixon had a sunbelt strategy.

Wallace didn't "found his own party". He ran under the wacko far-right "American Independent Party" which already existed based in California. In effect he blocked the Southern Strategy.

Four years earlier he had offered to run with Goldwater as his running mate. Even offered to switch parties to do it, although that wouldn't have been necessary.

The party was formed in 1968 and immediately nominated George Wallace as its first presidential nominee. Wallace won the former segregationist states in 1968. Nixon won every state in the country except 1 in 1972. Jimmy Carter won all of those states in 1976 and would have lost the election without them.

So you're telling me that prior to 1968 the Republicans were the Commie sympathizing wackos that burned the American flag, wanted to defund the military, and tax us all into equality? Then both teams agreed to switch sides over one single issue? Then again, if you see everything through the lens of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc., that might make sense to you.

Also, Trump's five biggest margins of victory in 2016 were in West Virginia, Wyoming, Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Kentucky, not the deep South.
