Another Repub leaving the party?

Well OK big boy..... :cuckoo: Whatever keeps you warm at night.

Meantime, how about you explain to me why the Repubs have won three elections in Democrat heaven, Northern Virginia since November?

Why don't you explain to me why the Republican Gubernatorial candidate in Virginia is up 10 points over the Democrat (a former DNC chairman)?

Why don't you tell me why the Republican candidate is up 15 points over the NJ incumbent governor?

Keep thinking the Repubs are dead. You are in for a VERY rude awakening.

Well we'll just have to wait and see if all your 'victories' materialize, won't we. But my point that the Repubs are puposely pushing out 'moderates' is undeniable. Only 21% of voters self-identify are Repubs in recent polls. Over 200,000 voters in Penn. switched parties to vote for Obama. If you don't see these trends as important I can't help you.
and the dems are declining also
wake the fuck up
both parties are seen as no real difference

had McCain won, he would likely be doing damn near the same stupid shit Obama is doing
except you'd be pissed as well as i am

Sorry got to disagree with you here. McCain would NOT have let congress pass all of the porkulas bullshit. And he would not be taking over the banks, car companies etc either. He would also not let the tax cuts expire. McCain was not my best pick, but he would have been a much better choice then the nitwit in chief and his band of idiots that we ended up with.

actually, i doubt it would hurt at all
since more than likely most of those that support Powell are of the more liberal to begin with

and it might pull more conservatives back into the party

There aren't enough conservatives in America to win on your own. About a third of Americans consider themselves conservatives, and only 20% of Americans are conservative Republicans. That ain't a big enough tent.

So unless you want to spend a decade wandering outside the halls of power - which I am assuming will happen - the Republican party must find a way for moderates to feel comfortable in the party. All I've heard are the bleatings from the far right like PI wanting to drive the moderates out. But deep down, I don't think the Republican party is that stupid.

FUCK OFF! DON'T BUY OUR COLA!

GET OUT OF HERE! WE DON'T WANT YOU OWNING OUR CARS!

WHAT ARE YOU STILL DOING HERE? WE DON'T WANT YOU AT DISNEYLAND! GET OFF OUR FUCKING RIDES!

You're right about one thing; Powell, whether he knows it or nor, would destroy or drastically dilute the brand if he has his way. That is why some of us say PLEASE GO !

And your appeal gets less ... and less ... and less ...

I think you are wrong about that. Why else would the left wing loonies want the GOP to listen to every moderate (touting Obama praise) mouth piece that comes down the pike. McCain WAS a moderate and Powell snubbed him for the uber left socialist candidate. I think the GOP listening to Powell ( or Liberals in general) at this point is just stupid.

As long as the hard right wants to brand "RINOs" and drive them out of the party, then the GOP will have a hard time winning national elections.

Name me any election where the victor lost Independents.

I don't see where the republicans have driven anyone from the ranks. Powell just had a difference in ideology than what the reublicans had. Specter jumped because the writing was on the wall that he wasn't going to get re elected.
Now Liberman....he was banished from his party...nothing more cut and dry on that. They wanted him out and made it public.

Hay, I still can't figure out why in tarnation it makes any difference what party some retired ol' has been likes better.

Yet Lieberman caucuses with the Democrats. Funny that.

Specter left because he was going to lose the nomination, not the election. He will almost certainly be re-elected. There have been many moderates who have been targeted by the hard-right in the primaries, even when they knew that the defeated moderate Republican candidate had the best chance of winning the election.

Look at the reaction here to Colin Powell leaving. You think this is evidence of a party tolerant of other views? Hardly. By becoming more pure, the GOP is making itself smaller and less relevant.

Obama will not keep all of the indy's now that they know his true agenda. And if you think dem's wont boot the first democrat who comes out against Obama,I've got swamp land for ya...cheap.

See Kramer and what they did to his reputation for his honesty.

We'll see. That's what they said about Clinton. Its a bad strategy to wait for your opponent to screw up. It relies entirely on your opponent.

Besides, right now, his approval ratings are high amongst independents, and independents support Democrats over Republicans by nearly 2 to 1.

I think Powell is leaving because of his views...not that the republicans are pushing him out. No one was strongarming him. If you think that your wrong.
Your right with Specter, he would have lost the nomination...that's politics though. No one asked him or strongarmed in in leaving. It surprised the republicans that he did it. There is a difference Toro, you do realize that don't you? Fact is there is a lot of talk that he won't get the democratic nomination either. He's around 80, and there is younger talent.
Yes, Leiberman still caucuses with the dems. He's a liberal. Just because he wasn't in lockstep with Pelosi on the war....they wanted him out. That is just rich. Now that is just hypocritical on your part to slide over that. But don't let me interfere with your story.
It doesn't bother me that Powell left. It's one vote, and he wasn't really the relevant in the party. He was a Military man and that is where I have respect for him.

yeah, the dems didnt like Lieberman because he only voted with them 92% of the time
how much will they like Specter when he only votes with them 58% of the time

Your insult aside, the comments of both Cheney and Limbaugh clearly look like attemps to push Powell out of the party (which is what I said), or is this just the way that Repubs bond with fellow Repubs?

I guess it must be since Powell endorsed and voted for Obama. What's your point?

My point is that the Repubs are purging themselves of any moderate voices. They have become shrill, unhinged and completely predictable in their anger at the rejection by the American voters.
Repubs need to rid themselves of the rabid right or risk becomeing irrelevant for the forseeable future.
The demographic shifts which propelled Obama are undeniable, young people (the future) have embraced the Democratic party.
So long Repubs.

Yeah, in your wet dreams.

Are you high on crack? Or do you just have a compulsion to defend the party of george bush?

Lieberman became an indepedent to win an election, but he caucuses with the Dems.

Jim Jeffords and Arlen Specter willfully chose to leave the republican party and caucus with the opposition

There is a general trend occurring.

In the 80s and 90s, you had Democrats crossing the floor and becoming Republicans. Now, the trend is the other way, with Republicans going across the floor to the Democrats.

There are, what, 47 Blue Dogs in the Congress and Senate. How many Republican moderates are there? There are 2 in the senate. How many in the House? A dozen? Two dozen maybe? Where are the "DINOs?" We know of RINOs, and the far ends of the GOP want them purged. There are no purging of DINOs in the Democrat party. They are being welcomed with open arms. The Democrats are smart enough to know you need those people in the party to win. The Republicans don't seem to care about winning, or at least the far right of the party doesn't.

Specter was elected with Ronald Reagan. Reagan saw the Republican party as a big tent. Colin Powell was a loyal Republican and no longer feels comfortable in the party because of the hard right turn the party has taken, and the lack of tolerance for those who do not espouse the doctrine. The Small Tent Republicans want it that way. It is a strange strategy to drive away people who had been in the party for decades. This is not a good thing for the Republican party.

You want proof of it here? How many Republicans here have lamented the loss of Specter and Powell? Find me one, I'd like to know. Almost uniformly, the conservatives are happy they are gone.

Its really dumb. And sad.

Enjoy being outside looking in for the next decade.

BTW, for the record, I'm an Independent having left the Republicans several years ago after seeing the rise of intolerance in the party for competing views, amongst other things.

I don't do drugs Red, but, you might want to lay off the hemp. Red, George Bush is no longer president....I don't understand why his name is constantly brought up. If you have read prior posts from me...I'm no fan of his. Lieberman was being kicked to the curb by his own party. Follow the money in that primary Red, it wasn't going to Joe. Pelosi didn't like his views with the Iraq war. He was forced to run as an Independant if he wanted to remain in politics. Yes, he does caucus with the dems, I said that. He votes with them 90% of the time. That's the irony of this...he wasn't in lockstep with Pelosi on the war, and he paid for it. One more time Red...I'm not a republican, I'm an Independent. I'm just not a liberal in any fashion. I can't think the same way you do with liberalism.
