Another Reason Why The Left Will Win

You seem to lack the ability to see the entire spectrum, and nibble on tiny pieces.

And the language that you choose in responding to the poster marks you as being less

than cultured.

Try to remember that these are your colleagues and you are out in public.

For your edification, all the totalitarian doctrines share enough similarities to be considered in the same category.

At the opposite end of the political spectrum would be those that value the individual over the collective.

Damned funny. Here ol' Chic is extolling the individual, when all I see is that her politics support the individual corperation.

Such people are the chief support of the authoritarian regimes, the petro-dictators around the world. They fight any attempt of our nation for energy independence.

Modern Conservatism. Anti-gay. Anti-science. Anti-individual. Anti-peace.

Breaker boys got dealth with by their Elders. If struck by guy with an iron pipe, the guy with the iron pipe would've been found on a ridge after being struck with lead. The kids in their had many kin living outside of the jurisdiction of the coal companies and were generally outlaws, and they dispensed mountain justice against those who had it coming. And more than likely that man was shipped in from out of the area. So they had no political reason to not kill him.

So....the guy with the pipe is just there to boost moral?

To make sure they keep up and don't slack off, the pole has many uses.

So, the guy with the pipe/pole is verbally encouraginging them. He probably has candy in his pockets for "positive reinforcement" and writes Dispiline Reports in triplicate that will be distributed to the parents and the administration?

LOL

Yeah, keep snorting the Kool Aid.

National Socialism. Hitler was a Leftist, a Socialist; he was not interested in individual rights and liberty.

Epic Fail, my Friend

Hitler was Pro-Military, anti-Communist, anti-Homosexual, and Nationalistic. How many of those are Conservative talking points?

As for rights and liberties... Conservatives tend to be pro-Rights and pro-Liberties only in very specific circumstances. The rest of the time they appear to want to legislate morality.

The latest chapter involves the teaching of the history of unions. To many of us, unions are important, but, then, so is the elevator and we don't teach its history.

You teach the history of Unions for the same reason you teach the history of Capitalism. Both have helped accomplish a great deal, and both have their share of excesses.

I'm not sure what the uproar is here.

We learned about it all in school, we learned about unions when talking about Industrial Revolution, we also learned about Capitalism during Economics class.

To make sure they keep up and don't slack off, the pole has many uses, the biggest cause of injury and death save for the dust, was slag.

Appalachian culture was/is clan based, and that makes for large amount of blood relatives who're extremely familiar to each other. At work, their father if still able and working or alive, would be told of his son's work problem, and the man would discipline him corporally for certain things, but he would never hit him with the pole. That would be certain death, during those times, and to an extent now, most justice is dealth with informally. The child who he struck with the pipe would've been taken coming out of the bar, or from or to work, or from his house and they would beat his children and kill his wife. Men in those positions, were either outcasts and hated, or outsiders and hated because of their position. Their lives held as much value to them as the worker's lives to the owners.

Being an Appalachian hillbilly myself (descended from Molly Maguires, I might add), I agree 100% it's important to understand the true history of labor in this country. When you live in what was obviously once a company town, with the clan system still strongly if informally in place, passed over by politicians because you don't have enough votes or money to matter and looking every day at the effects of long-term economic decay, it's the people who have the least that have the most to lose. And are most suspicous and cynical about even good government, and most afraid of change and the ideas, practices and people of the Outside. No amount of book learning completely erases that mindset for the folks who were raised in it, I should know. But learning the real history of workers' rights is important not just for those of us who live here but for the people who routinely denigrate us for our origins and give us no credit for our contributions while spitting on the freedoms for which our ancestors died. By all means, teach the history! The real, bloody, ugly history. Maybe more people will understand and appreciate how good they have it.

Great post Golld ! The thing is that we as Appalachians have become so demoralized and trampled upon that we don't have the morale and organization that our fathers, grandfathers, greatgrandfathers had. We just sit back and feel sorry for ourselves, let Americans disrespect and trample upon our dignity. Our tax dollars goes to ghettos and corporations. I was reading somewhere that for every federal dollar spent on educational, social, vocational, housing and healtcare spent in Appalachia, 20 more dollars is spent in ghettos. Ghettos were we end up when we've been ethnically cleansed from our hills. And in these same ghettos, we become stuck because employers can discriminate against us and get rid of us quickly and also they have no tax benefit to hire us. Held to different standards in recieving state and federal aid. Having to go to Afrocentric schools because we're not legally regarded as a minority and thus can't transfer schools. And at these educational factories of racism, being made victims of hate crimes and racial discrimination. And I won't even go into our media portrayls and the hypocritical double standard of leftists and multiculturalists. And they wonder why so many of our brothers and sisters become extremely xenophobic ? Why wouldn't someone become that way after either being utterly isolated and have a long developed cultural sense of "the world vs. us" and for others becoming the victims of racial discrimination and hate crimes.

In my own opinion, it's time to do what our forefathers and foremothers did.

Hmmm, I'm a Conservative and I could careless about gays.

I'm pro science.

Pro individual.

See peace in a pragmatic context. It's always preferable, but sometimes that's the worst option. It's easy to scream peace but remain ignorant to the consequences of peace, which may be worse than the price of war.

No, he was a taskmaster, and he wasn't nice. But he wasn't beating the children with it. If he did so, he'd found himself and his family dead. He did dole out corporal punishment, but that was accepted because if the child was messing up and not doing his job, then he had it coming. But at the sametime, the father or the appropriate male relation to the child would be told, and he'd be then corrected at home for it.

The foremen were cruel, but they weren't dumb. They knew there were limits. They were scared of their bosses and their Pinkerton terrorists, but they feared familial justice more.

Many extreme leftists were pro military.

Many leftists were and are anti communist.

At that time, most everyone was anti homosexual.

And also nationalism was the standard.

Don't compare leftism of today with leftism of that era.

It's not just leftists and mutlicuturalists though. It's also the wealthy suburbanites in their gated communities, and the corporatists like the OP, and classists of all ideological stripes. If they know the real history we are a threat, if they don't we are just the ignorant unwashed and not worthy of their attention. None of them understand us or bother to try, all of them look down on us and our contrbutions, and all of them have a stake in keeping us ignorant and exploited. I greatly admire the Maguires and so many others who did what the sheep of the time wouldn't and stood up to what basically amounted to slavery. The union movement that grew alongside it was hijacked and overly politicized which led to its decline, but there has to be some equal and opposite force to keep the balance between the people and corporatist interests. Educating the general public as well as our own children on who we are and the truth about what we've accomplished and where our lifestyle really came from may be a first step to eliminating the need to do what our forebears did. I hope it doesn't come to that point.

Well said and you're exactly right. But you know what though ? I think that's what we must do. It's a horrifically sad situation where that's the best option and essentially only option. It worked when we fought the Cherokees for the only land we could live on and the only other choice was slavery in the Caribbean. Or when we were faced with genocide by the British and we as a people stood up and fought. Or during those long decades of slavery by the coal interests. Or the fact that many of us live in third world situations and have the lowest GDP in the western world.

IMO I think it'll take the rise of the new narco lords until the point where they become a threat, and armies must be sent again into the hills. That'll be the spark. Right now skirmishes between the Federal government and Appalchians employed by them are rising.

HMMMmmmm....:eusa_whistle:...no, I think they understand us very well, which is why they live "in their gated communities."

They probably don't want to live next to a single-wide trailor with a redwood deck containing several members of the water-mellon seed spitting team practicing their aim on a rusty washer in the yard and finishing a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer.

Damn, they are up-tight bitches.

The mentailty, there's understanding people who live in other situations.

But in my own opinion, it's the subconscious fear that but for luck, they could be poor and have nothing.

You're probably right: it couldn't possibly be the conscious fear of living nextdoor to someone with 5 pit-bulls chained up in the yard, and a 1978 Chevy sitting on cinder-blocks.

I meant in regards to mentality. Like some people look down upon the homeless because they subconsciously fear that but for chance, they could be in the same situation, or people look down upon the handicapped.

I think the word your looking for is Schadenfreude:
gloating at somebody else's bad luck: malicious or smug pleasure taken in somebody else's misfortune
[ Late 19th century. < German < Schaden "harm" + Freude "joy" ]

Encarta® World English Dictionary[North American Edition] © & (P) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Developed for Microsoft by Bloomsbury Publishing Plc.

While you could be right, especially if the people you're talking about are teenagers, schadenfreude certainly isn't monopolised by any one economic class.

lol Exactly Gold.

Personally, I don't care if someone's got a car up on blocks or dogs, as long as they don't bother me or get in my business. But usually people who have five pit bulls are douchebags usually.
