Two senators eye gas tax hike to pay for highways and bridges

A bipartisan pair of senators has urged President Obama’s debt commission to consider raising the gas tax to pay for infrastructure projects.
Sens. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio) have written to the chairmen of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform advocating for a 25-cent per gallon tax increase.

“We suggest that the commission include an increase in the federal tax on gasoline and diesel as part of your report to the president,” they wrote. “We suggest that the taxes be increased by one cent per month for 25 months — a total of 25 cents over a three-year period.”

Bi-partisan my eye! One lib and one Rino! What's "bi-partisan" in that? They don't have different views. What a joke.

For years Voinivich has been a thorn in Ohio's side. The only reason I ever voted for him, was people like Metzenbaum were worse!

That all changed in 2007, when he became so onerous, I wrote him and told him no matter what, I would never vote for him again. I must not have been the only one, because miracles of miracles, he signaled he would not run again. :happy-1:

At a time when the economy is so bad and so many families are hurting, what an idea! Higher taxes!

Do these liberals and Rinos ever consider that we are stretched to the limit right now?

Rush warned that those remaining were not going to learn the lesson of November 2. They aren't going to be humble. They are going to try and double down on their agenda and shove as many of their socialist ideas as they can get away with, before the new Congress is seated.

Adios Voinivich. I will NOT miss you!

the economy is so bad.
I made a million dollars yesterday.

Families are hurting.
The solution to that problem is to cut taxes on all those big corporations I own stock in.

What an idea! Higher taxes!
We don't need no stinking infrastructure.

We are stretched to the limit right now?
You need to be a rugged individualist, practice the Protestant work ethic, be self reliant, pretend you believe that stuff about American exceptionalism, get a haircut and look for a real job.

Americans love Socialism, dude.

I can promise you, tax increases are coming. They might not be called "taxes" but the amount you are going to pay to the government is going to go up.

Just as spending is going to be cut.

Otherwise, the United States will default on its debt, and we will go through what we went through in 2008-09, only that could end up looking like a picnic.

So good for the RINOs. The ideological lemmings who would rush us off the cliff in the name of political expediency are to be ignored.

Didn't we just spend a whole bunch of bucks on "shovel ready" infrastructure projects?

My fellow Americans, we really need to stop electing corrupt idiots into positions of power.

You sound like George Soros.

I don't know how you expect to pay for things, but a gas tax seems like a logical way to pay for hwy infrastructure. A true conservative pays for things needed, instead of borrowing money from their children and grandchildren.

How do you propose to pay for infrastructure?

Trickle down?

I really hope the GOP prevents an increase in the debt ceiling so we can bring this mess to a head as soon as possible.

Privatize it.

Where privatization has occurred, the infrastructure and systems are better maintained for a cheaper cost.

The gasoline tax should be a % tax on the price of gas/fuel.
why?

As the price of gas goes up the useage goes down and so does the fixed per gallon tax income from fuel sales. At the same time the consts of asphalt and such supplies goes up.
A lose lose situation.
But if the tax went up along with the price of fuel then the income would stay more stable enabling road repairs to continue.

the move to more fuel efficient cars also drops the fixed per gallon tax income.

But if yall like potholes and such?

Like Enron?

With Gas prices going up for the first time ever without an increase in demand. This is stupid. Remember the more gasoline costs the more goods shipped by truck (most of everything you buy) will also go up. And these people in Washington know that. They will be glad to see the revenue by more gas taxes and sales taxes because of the other increases.

Voinovich should have retired 6 years ago. I tried working with his office too. They told me to write the legislation that was needed and they would look at it.........

That's a really good idea - set up to government to profit from bubbles, and implement permanent spending increases based upon bubble tax receipts. They won't lower spending after the bubble bursts.

This is how CA frelled itself. Spending increased to match the DotCom bubble tax receipts, and never corrected when the bubble burst.
