More Americans fell below the poverty line last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Tuesday.

The nation's poverty rate rose to 15.1% in 2010, up from 14.3% in 2009 and to its highest level since 1993.

Last year marked the third year in a row the rate increased. All told, 46.2 million people are considered in need. In addition, real median household income last year was $49,445, a 2.3% decline, the Census Bureau reported.

Just as history is written by the victors, poverty is defined by the Left and based on the desire to enlist the covetous.

As several recent threads have revealed, the 'poor' in America are far richer than what would have been considered rich a century ago.

The idea that the government can and should help the poor is a fallacy. Especially the Federal government who has absolutely no authority given to them by the people or the States.

...The nation's poverty rate rose to 15.1% in 2010, up from 14.3% in 2009 and to its highest level since 1993...
There're more than one reason for this. One is the fact that people have less money (duh...), but the other is that success with Democrats requires an ever rising poverty line to justify more programs/hiring at welfare departments.

The irony is that while the poor vote Democrat, poverty levels always peak when Democrats are in charge (1993 and now). Somehow they blame it on their predecessor and falling poverty levels with Republicans are likewise credited to previous regimes.

Krugman sees this as evidence that the next Stimulus should be somewhere between $3 trillion and $568 trillion.
