If you want facts then how about this? The combined cost of government (fed, state and local) is over 40% of the GNP. According to the CIA Factbook the US spends more money on the cost of government than all but the total GNP of one other country on earth. That is a big drag on the real job producing economy. We also have the most debt, by far.

You look at almost any family in America regardless of income and the total cost of government is usually the largest single family expense when you look at everything, even if they don't pay income taxes. In my family my wife's salary usually went to pay the taxes for the year. How can any family get ahead when the cost of government is that high? That is the real cost of the filthy ass welfare state.

If the stupid Liberals would worry a little more about stimulating capitalism so jobs could be created instead of redistributing wealth and income the economy would be booming. The economy does not grow by taking money that has already been earned and giving it away to somebody that didn't earn the money. The economy grows when capital is created and profits are made, something Libtards have a very difficult time understanding.

With inequality rising, particularly at the top, the rewards for clambering up the income distribution are greater, and so are the costs of getting stuck at the bottom" ("Social Mobility Hasn't Fallen; What It Means and Doesn't Mean," Jan. 23). This warning is confusing.

If rising inequality does indeed mean that "the rewards for clambering up the income distribution are greater," then we should expect more such clambering. In a market economy that means more work, more saving, more investing, more innovation. The results of this clambering might not yet appear in the data, but it's strange that Mr. Cassidy thinks that the higher rewards for "clambering up the income distribution" are necessarily a problem.

Also, why does rising income inequality mean that the "costs of getting stuck at the bottom" are greater? Unless Mr. Cassidy assumes that Jones gets richer only by making Smith poorer (and surely no modern economics pundit would commit such a primitive error), why does Mr. Cassidy dismiss even the possibility that individuals'absolute incomes can rise even if their relative incomes do not?

Capitalism, by it's very nature, will always have systemic poverty that it relies on, usually these are the sweatshop workers or the diamond miners in Africa.. Capitalists always attempt to undermine labor movements, wage increases, and constantly seek out countries without labor protection/wage laws... Capitalism cannot end poverty, the projections show, without any changes in the financial market and pure stability, that the worlds poorest will finally be able to make a $1.25 a day.
