Fact Check: Clinton’s bogus claim that Trump didn’t want to save the auto industry

It goes on and on. Take one statement of many out of context.

You could have let it go, and rebuild itself, through the free enterprise system,” Trump said. “You could have let it go bankrupt, frankly, and rebuild itself, and a lot of people think that’s the way it should have happened. Or you could have done it the way it went. I could have done it either way. Either way would have been acceptable. I think you would have wound up in the same place.”

This is where Clinton gets her “let it go” line. She makes it sound like that’s what Trump said at the time- when she was casting votes as a senator to support the auto industry. But actually that statement was made years later – and Trump is saying he could have supported any option.

You need to read the full piece @ Fact Check: Clinton's bogus claim that Trump didn't want to save the auto industry - Breaking911 where it clearly shows that Trump has been consistent about the deal all along.

The point is merely this: Does the President have the legal, constitutional, or moral right to ignore the existing U.S.. bankruptcy laws, and cobble together a resolution that "fucks" stockholders, bondholders, vendors and service providers, employees of related companies who were to be given retirement benefits equal to GM's (but weren't), not to mention screwing the American people - all to pay off the UAW for its support during the 2008 presidential election campaign?

The short answer is "No."

It is un-knowable what would have happened to General Motors, Chrysler, and their various business units if the Bankruptcy laws had been followed. Probably a couple of brands and divisions would have survived and others would not, and - like AT&T - there would now be several companies that originated at the breakup of GM.

For the President, or anyone else to take credit for "saving GM" or "saving the American auto industry" is so grotesquely dishonest as to warrant a literal slap in the face. The American auto industry is comprised of one thriving industry WITHOUT THE UAW, and one struggling and bankrupt (but for the government bailout) industry WITH THE UAW.

It is so bad that Ford spits in the figurative eye of the American people, telling us that it is simply not possible to build economy cars within our borders. While VW Honda, Nissan, Subaru, etc., are doing it every day of the week WITHOUT THE UAW's help.
