Another Case For English Only

It is a very very safe bet that I live and work with for among and on behalf of immigrants from every place and of every sort every day all day in a much deeper, more comprehensive and consistent manner than anyone else on this site. It's not even close. Immigrants of all sorts understand the value and crucial importance of adapting to the language and culture of the United States far better than any big mouth posting here.

It is also painfully obvious that few posting here have any significant knowledge or perspective on the history of immigration in the United States.

Immigrants today are assimilating just as those before them did. This is true regardless of what anyone scowling at the woman ahead of them in the check out line speaking on her cell phone in a 'scary' unfamiliar language, or anyone raising their car windows in frightened panic because they are driving past a teenager standing on a street corner, or anyone enduring the unspeakable torment of clicking past Univision or pressing 1 for English may want to believe in their spiteful, ignorant fantasies.

Some are, some aren't. The ones who are aren't a problem.

The Mexicans have already won, they don't speak English but you all eat tacos.

Was there a point in that or just a bump. If we're going to ban bump stocks ought we not also ban post bumps? They are equally obnoxious. Though the latter kills only with laughter.

The US will never "make English mandatory" the way some halfwits here are dreaming of it. Even if we did, it would not prevent all of the problems mentioned.

The real trick is how/when/how much of a student's L1 is constructive, and when is too much counter-productive? It's a precarious balancing act that needs to take into consideration a complex interplay of various elements.
