Walmart is the best thing that ever happened to retail, they drive down prices and draw in flocks of customers to an area. While I wouldn't want to be a grocer next to a Walmart I had made suggestions about the type of business one might open up next door to a Walmart and do very well. In addition, Walmart employees are taught customer service is the key to the store's success and that education is priceless!

Microsoft? Stock in MSFT flat-lined 10 years ago and they have a world of trouble ahead of them. They OS is the worst product on the planet and their applications are in the crosshairs of Google. MSFT is a classic example of how competition drives down high margins

The phone companies are competing with the cable companies and wireless networks for customers, you really thing high prices and crappy services is a winning combination.

Competition typically pressures competitors to keep prices down in an honestly run free market.

Until the competitors forge industry alliances to petition the government, of course, then suddenly the competition becomes a mostly a sham.

29.95 a month for phone service with no charge for any calls in the US.....

in 1979 when I was a senior in college with a girlfriend at home 250 miles away, my phone bills were over 150 a month.

It is not theory that competitioon creates lower prices....it is econ0omic fact.....do you know anything about supply and demand? Increase supply as demand stays the same, prices drop.

Increase those that supply with no change in demand, supply will increase overnight....prices go down.

Or, you could simply say "no it wouldnt" to win a debate.

Free market? There's no such thing and really never has been. A totally free market would be without government controls or strictures whatsoever...which DOESN'T EXIST.

Competition can bring down prices of course. People undercut each other for business all the time. Wal-mart actually put a pickle company almost out of business by requiring them to bring in a gallon jar of pickles at next to $2 on the price tag.

What's hilarious is the idea that somehow government competition will kill private insurance. Is that what happened with state-run schools? Uhm no. State schools that are much cheaper didn't run off private universities. That didn't even happen on a high school level. Why? Because if you offer a better product, people will pay more.

You argue that govt run healthcare will suck? Ok. Great. Then people will use private companies that are better.

What scares me and always will is Section 102 that seems to funnel us all into the public option over time.

Ed is about right as to what the problem is. You don't see prices falls as much as they should with multiple competitors because there not really competing by the same set of rules.

The problem is that most people really dont' care about discussion - at least from what I've observed. Many have already made up their minds before the facts (I mean FACTS) were presented to them ... and they don't seem like they want to learn the facts, they just want to scream at the top of their lungs: "Socialist!" or "Anti-Obama!" I've been trying to stay out of the conversation because it seems just a big cluster-fuck by now and the truth also is... I don't have a stake in it, I don't live in the USA anymore. I just wish I could find more facts and less bullshit - especially the ideological partisan kind (which is the least helpful).
