MILAN, Italy (Reuters) -- The Champions League quarterfinal between Inter Milan and city rivals AC Milan was abandoned after 73 minutes on Tuesday after Milan keeper Dida was struck by one of dozens of flares thrown down from the stands.

German referee Markus Merk took the players off the pitch at the San Siro stadium after Inter fans began hurling plastic bottles and then over 30 flares on to the penalty area below them after a header by Esteban Cambiasso was disallowed.

Dida received medical treatment to his shoulder while Inter players urged their fans to stop hurling objects on to the pitch.

The goal frame disappeared in clouds of smoke as flares continued to be rained down and burn on the pitch.

The players came back on to the field after 25 minutes but Merk took them off again after just 30 seconds play and abandoned the game when more flares came raining down with no sign of intervention from the police.

Milan was leading 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Andriy Shevchenko, which had put it 3-0 up on aggregate after it won last week's first-leg 2-0 at the San Siro stadium the two clubs share.

UEFA's website reported that "referee Merk will now submit his report to the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body, who will deal with the case."

Bayern wins 3-2, but Chelsea advances
MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) -- Chelsea reached the Champions League semifinals for the second successive season by completing a 6-5 aggregate win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday, despite losing the second leg 3-2 in a frantic finale.

Chelsea, in control of the tie after a 4-2 win in the first leg, moved further ahead when a shot from Frank Lampard deflected in off Lucio after half an hour.

Bayern equalized through Claudio Pizarro with 25 minutes to go, after Petr Cech had tipped a Michael Ballack header against the post, and the four-time European champions briefly threatened a heroic comeback on the night of their 100th Champions League game.

Didier Drogba's header 10 minutes from time restored the Chelsea lead and the Premier League side was in control for the remainder of the game, with the manner of victory a lot more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

Substitute Paolo Guerrero tapped in the equaliser in the 90th minute, before Mehmet Scholl blasted in the winner four minutes into injury-time.

There was only time remaining to kick off before referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez blew for full-time to send Chelsea through to face either Liverpool or Juventus in the last four.

"I actually still thought we could pull it off until they scored the second goal," said Bayern coach Felix Magath, who was in charge of the VfB Stuttgart side that went out to Chelsea in the Champions League last season.

"I was certain that once we got a second goal we'd have a good chance for a third goal," he told Germany TV station SAT-1. "But when Chelsea got their second goal it was over for me."

Saw some clips of this on TV---these fans really need some serious anger control classes---Europeans getting a little frustrated or what?

Hey this is European football, this is what they do. By most standards this is pretty tame, at least the stadium was not burnt down. I love the passion!

GO PANATHINAIKOS! GREEN HELL FOREVER!
